  • Decatur Ala wednesday morning August the 17th 1864 My Dear wife I received yours of the 4th & 6th in due time and was verry glad to hear from you once more we are all well and are liveing on the fat of the land we just got in yesterday off of a scout our company has only stayed in camp one night in the last nine days we went to Courtland last week and a distance of twenty miles to have a little fight we tried to surprise them By going all the way after knight But they heard of us and run before we got there we stayed in Courtland two days and nights and had lots of fun talking to the Rebel women I tell you they are a heap much worse than the men they say
