FREDERICK STEWART, 30 BROAD STREET, NEW YORK. TELEPHONE 2ISO BROAD. A\ < x • O • June 12th, 1900, Dr. C. P. Ambler, Secretary, Appalachian National Park Association, Asheville, N» 0. Dear Sir:- I have received several resolutions from your association. I represent the owners of the tract of land in Western North Carolina, consisting of about 78,000 acres, knows as the Whittier Tract of Timberland, and extends north and west to Bryson City on theMurphy branch of the Old Richmond & Danville Railroad, about sixty-five miles west of Asheville. Do you think this property could be used for the purposes of your association? -Yours very truly, C. C. a

Various organizations and individuals expressed support of an Appalachian National Park and a bill before Congress authorizing the purchase of four million acres for that purpose. A movement for a national park in the Appalachians was spearheaded by Appalachian National Park Association, formed in 1899. The association raised public awareness of the issue, but disbanded before the formation of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
