  • I missed seeing Cornelia in Chicago. She was there in the middle of the week and I got in the next week. Your plans for future abode sound fine. I’m sorry Barbara is having such a hard time but the girls are old enough now to look after her and you need some peace and quiet to do what you like. Dont worry about the $10.00 a month. I have just recently gotten squared away to the point where I have a little extra above running expenses every month and with the children, except Barbara, on their own I hope to be able to catch up on my debt to you. So, hereafter, I’ll send you a check for $10.00 the first of every month. Whenever I can I’ll add something to it but you can count on the $10.00. The first one is enclosed. Unless the Government should decide to retire all of us older people to make room for returned soldiers etc. I’ll be able to do this regularly from now on. I even have a pipe dreamthat [sic] one of these days I’ll really make some money on the nettle deal but I’m not counting that till it arrives. Wouldn’t it be odd if one of us really did make a few dollars. Especially me. Tomorrow is the Fourth of July. But to Government employees its just another day. We have not had a holiday in three years, except Christmas. FDR made us the goat as an example to the rest of the country but no other organization, to my knowledge, has paid any attention. Everybody else takes their legal holidays as usual. In New York the business offices have never made any change in their hours - they even take all day Saturday off, just as they always did. I’m certainly in a quandary about voting this time. I dont have any use for FD and Mrs. R and think Dewy is just a conceited little upstart. However, business men in New York tell me he has really done a good job as Governor so perhaps he would not be too bad down here. I doubt, though, if he knows Helsinki from Chungking so far as foreign affairs is concerned. Love,
