Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • December 19, 1947 Dear Mama, I had an idea that I might get up to Ithaca soon to deliver the enclos [sic] in person but the idea did not work out. Instead I was in East Lansing for a few hours about two weeks ago. I was just there between trains attending a meeting and did not have time to get over to the house. Carl came up to the room at the college where I was and we talked for a few minutes but I did not see anyone else. Jeannette was home - getting re [sic] to lead me down the aisle, Carlton said - and Virginia was of course away teaching school. Carleton seemed well but, like me, he is getting pretty tired on the job and needs a long rest. In fact we talked most- ly about what we are going to do when we retire. We have the same idea a small place over on the Eastern Shore. He wants to go back to Laurel near there and I think, too, that that would be just right. It is a pl [sic] ant country with a milder climate than here both in winter andsummer [sic]. I a snug little house on ten acres or so a fellow could be comfortable an [sic] could keep occupied raiseing [sic] some specialty crops that could bring in a little income. Well, that’s for the future as neither of us are at the retirement age quite yet. I have four more years to go and he about te [sic] However, things may change in that time. Last night I had a phone call from Stillman Berry the man whose family the Winnecook Ranch where Elwyn lived for so many years. I had not see Stillman for many years but he seems to have remembered me and we had a fine long talk. He said that Elwyn has a good job with the Railroad no He is in charge of ‘re-conditioning’ the cars that come in. I dont kno what that means exactly and it seems a long way from agriculture but [X] seems happy and it certainly is much less worry than the running of a Montana Ranch. Elwyn, like may [sic] of us, worked hard and knew his busines [sic] but never quite hit the jackpot. So I’m more convinced than ever that success - in the money sense - is almost entirely a matter of chance. you happen to be lucky and are at the right spot when something happens you are a “success”. Well, I dont worry about that much. I never did expect to get rich and am not disappointed that I didn’t. I’m afraid B has other ideas. He has always said that he wanted to make money and h [sic] has gone out doing it. My only fear is that he may not be one of the lucky ones and wont get rich. In that case he may suffer some bad desi lusioning and I would not want him to do that. At present he is intent on getting a bigger part of the business and is plowing all his profits back into the business. That’s all right provided it pays off some day Anyway he is his own boss and that is, of all things on earth, the most important to people with an independent temperament. Which is somewhat a family characteristic I would say. Barbara is doing extremely well in her practise teaching and it looks as though she will be a school teacher. She expects to get her Teacher Certificate from the University of Maryland in February and has already been offered some pretty good jobs because of the fine recommendations that the Univ. people have been giving her. Dr. Mesche [?], the Asst. Dean of Home Economics told the Univ. Registrar the other day that “Barbara has the finest natural equipment for a teacher that I have ever seen in a girl”. So perhaps she has found herself. I hope so for she has taken a pretty severe emotional licking and was getting to the point of feeling frustrated. Jane is still homesick but is si [sic] busy that she doe not have much time think about it. Ralph has found that in a place like Stanford they real pour it on to the students. He has to study every spare minute. Ralph an excellent and conscientious student and is getting fine marks but it
