Sorry this is so messy and hard to read. I have sent same to George. You might talk it over with him & let me know. We want your opinion before we advise Grannie. Boonville, N.Y. Feb 16, 1949 Dear Leonard and George, Please excuse this paper but it is the quickest & easiest way I have to write in duplicate without a typewriter. And I want you both to have this information as soon as possible. I am enclosing copies of a letter [?] Mamma recently received from Macmillan. She has only recently acquired the habit of consulting us in matters of business like this. It is lucky she does so, for her business affairs are in a bad mix due to the fact that her business papers, letters, contracts, accounts and records were all burned & completely destroyed when the farm house burned. At that time she sent to the Copyright Office in Washington for such information as they could send her. They sent her copies of the original copyright registrations as follows: Camping and woodcraft. Outing Publishing Co. 1911 Our Southern Highlanders. Outing Publishing Co. 1913 Cherokee Pamphlet Laura M. Kephart 1936 Mamma also has a copy of the contract with Macmillan Outing 1913 for the publication of Our Southern Highlanders. Also agreement from Macmillan accepting terms of said contract. Also she has following ^ enclosed letters from Macmillan: Feb. 8, 1940 regarding permission to [?] copyright on Sporting Firearms (which Macmillan owned) June 13, 1940 renewal copyright above duly registered, etc. March 4, 1940 _ Form she signed accepting 5% on all books sold for export. Explanation for same is adequate. The above is a complete list of all papers and/or letters that Mamma has (so far as I know) concerning her business association with Macmillan. She says

In this letter of February 16, 1949 Barbara Bird writes to her brothers Leonard Kephart (1892-1988) and George Kephart to send them a letter their mother received from Macmillan regarding copyright. Barbara mentions that all of Laura’s business papers, letters, contracts, accounts and records were destroyed in the fire and shares with them what little information Laura was able to get from the Copyright Office in Washington after the fire. The letter from Macmillan is asking Laura to agree to a reduced royalty so they can afford to reprint Our Southern Highlanders. Barbara asks for Leonard’s and George’s opinion on the matter and asks that they do not tell Laura she has sent them this letter.
