M. V. RlCHARI>S, Land and Industrial Agent. in your reply please quote our File No. 4880 Subject: Southern Railway Company. OFFICE OF THE LAND AND INDUSTRIAL AGENT, 719 Thirteenth Street, N. W., SEE MAP ON REVERSE SIDE. Washington, d. djtay 24, 1900. E DR. C. P. AMBTJ5R, SECY., Appalachian National Park Association, Asheville, North Carolina. My Dear Doctor: Yours of 23rd instant received. I think there is no doubt about the amendment to the Agricultural Bill referred to in my letter to you ©f April 26th, going through. I have recently spent considerable time with the Secretary of Agriculture Hon. James Wilson, and he is assured by the Chairmans of the Committee in both Houses that the amendment will be agreed upon. He assures that the amount appropriated will be judiciously expended in investigating the forest resources of Western North Carolina, and a careful report made. He is very much interested in the subject and it is important that our association make it a point to see that the experts placed in charge of the work be shown all of the points we desire them to examine• As soon as the Bill is passed, I will have another conference with the Secretary and write you again on the subject. Yours very

This series of letters has to do with legislation proposed by the by the Appalachian National Park Association. On January 4, 1900, the association submitted a Memorial to Congress; on May 25, 1900, a bill passed authorizing funds to investigate the possibility of a national park; several states passed resolutions in support of the park; in January 1901, President McKinley expressed support of the project. Although the organization had success early on, their efforts met with resistance and the organization disbanded in 1905.
