I am coming back." The charm of the Smokies depends on its living mantle, the tall old forest that covers even the steepest slopes with verdure and fills the woods with living forms that win one's interest and affection. Without that virgin forest the Smokies would be arid rocks. The stony bosom would be cold. Here to-day is the last stand of primeval American forest at its best. If saved— and if saved at all it must be done at once —it will be a joy and a wonder to our people for all time. The nation is summoned by a solemn duty to preserve it.

This 16-page article, “The Last of the Eastern Wilderness: An Article on the Proposed Great Smoky National Park,” is a classic piece by Horace Kephart. The article appeared in the 1926 edition of the magazine “World’s Work.” The article includes photographs by James E. (Jim) Thompson (1880-1976) was a noted photographer, hiker, and outdoor enthusiast who played a major role in promoting a national park in the Southern Appalachians. Horace Kephart (1862-1931) was noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Throughout his life, Kephart wrote many articles supporting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The article is shown here along with several versions of the original typed manuscript.
