JEROME PHILLIPS First President of Jackson County Unit North Carolina Education Association JACKSON COUNTY JOURNAL, Sylva, N. C, Fri., Nov. 12, 1909 Dr. Frank E. Hearn, Editor and Business Manager TEACHERS' MEETING AT SYLVA * LARGE CROWDS PRESENT * ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING * TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION ORGANIZED. 'Twas a good crowd that met at a good place and had a good time when the teachers met here last Saturday. Thirty-four teachers were expected to be present, and thirty-one answered to the roll call, the others being providentially hindered. The various subjects were taken up in the order announced and discussed in an able way by the teachers. The speeches of Professors Owen, Taylor, and Phillips deserve special mention. Miss Grace Hall read a communication from the president of the State Betterment Association, and made a short talk upon the same. Supt. Self spoke upon the importance of a teachers' organization, betterment work, reading circle, and other important features of education which directly affect the schools of the county. A Teachers' Association was organized with the following officers: S. J. Phillips, president; John W. Bird, 1st Vice president; T. Roy Allen, treasurer; Program Committee: R. P. Self, chm., Miss Gertrude Honeycutt and J. 0. Allen. The Superintendent will submit the constitution and by-laws to the next meeting. It is expected that this will be a success because it has several enthusiastic teachers and a determined superintendent backing it. We feel safe in saying that this was the best teachers' meeting ever held in Jackson County. Mr. R. 0. Self, the able supt., deserves much praise for the able manner in which he is awakening educational interest in the county and many meetings like this at different points cannot fail to do a vast amount of good. Associations are the foundation of all the professions and no one needs to assemble together for one another's good more than the teachers of the children— a great work is before them. JACKSON COUNTY JOURNAL, December 18, 1930 TEACHERS ORGANIZE SCHOOLMASTERS' CLUB The principals and men grade teachers of Jackson County Schools met at the Coward House in Sylva, on December 12, for the purpose of organizing a club of social and professional advantages to its members. After an informal dinner a business meeting was held, at which Mr. Bueck of Cullowhee was elected chairman. The club's membership is open to both short and long term principals and to men grade teachers of the county schools. Provision was made for monthly meetings, at which dinner will be served, discussions held, and the men will answer only to first name.
