  • PAGE 16/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/FEBRUARY 15, 1979 '/ think I'm going to enjoy It' Travis optimistic over V.P. appointment byJ.M. TRUNKS Staff Writer Vice President Travis said in an Interview Wed day he is optimistic about the next two months in his new office. "1 think I'm noing to enjoy it." He also thinks he and President Nelson will work well together; they originally worked together two years ago ai the local Pizza Hut. When asked how he felt about Cates' resignation, Travis said "1 can definitely see why he decided lo resign. I've talked to him about his personal problems; maybe it was the best thing he could do at the time." "But I thought he was a good vice president. He got a lot of criticism, and a lot of the good he did wasn't recognized and probably won't be for some time. "He was a dynamic vice president and his energy got others enthused," he said. Travis said Cates offered a few words of advice Monday. "He said to take the office and run it the way I thought it should be, and to set my own goals and not be influenced by other people's judgements. "I guess a lot of people are wondering if I'm going to sit here for two months and collect my stipend and just go home. "But I have many ideas and I think we can accomplish a lot of good in two months. My main thing will be to get all of the senators active right now. I want to reverse the trend of most of the legislature coming from a minority of Senators and get rid of the apathy toward committee work. "Most of the Senate committees need to be at least 75 percent more effective than they are right now," Travis said. Travis was President Pro Temp of the Senate until yesterday, as well as a commuter senator; chairman of the Commuter Affairs Committee; vice-chairman of the Rules Committee; and a member of the Senate Finance Committee, the University's Athletic Advisory, Traffic and Safety Institutional Affairs Committees; and the chancellor's advisory committee. He served as an SGA traffic court justice and vice president of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity last year. He is a marketing major from Charlotte and plans to attend graduate school after graduating in May. (He asked that all persons who ran for a senate seat last Fall get in touch with him in his office from 3-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays as soon as possible.)
