Dear Sir: Members of the various sharpshooters ' clubs in St. Louis and vicinity have formed a company of expert riflemen who desire to offer their services to the government. The origin and progress of this company are explained in the accompanying circular and newspaper clipping. We notice in the New York Sun of May 14th the following statement: Proposed Regimental of Sharpshooters. Washington, . May 13.—Representative Cum- mings of New York to-day introduced a bill to authorize the orgranization of one or more regi- ments of American independent sharpshooters, They are to be enlisted from the nation at large and possess special qualifications as marksmen. On behalf of the Missouri Sharpshooters I would respectfully suggest that a regiment of expert marksmen, chosen by competitive tests from the riflemen of the whole country, would form an exceptionally valuable arm of the service. Morgan's sharpshooters in the revolution were the corps d'elite of the Continental army. Swiss jagers, Boer hunters, and our own backwoodsmen at King's Mountain and New Orleans, have proven again and again that sharpshooters are invincible by ordinary troops, smokeless powder now makes carefully aimed fire practicable not only on outposts and skirmishing, but in the line of battle as well.
