  • FEBRUARY 25 A. T. MAINTENANCE TRIP— TAPOCO TO CHEOAH BALD Here is a splendid combination: a group of good hikes, and at the same time an opportunity to do some really worth-while work. In 1932 we scouted and started clearing an extension of our section of the Appalachian Trail, from the Great Smokies to the Nantahala Gorge. Last year we finished clearing and marking it to Cheoah Bald; the Nantahala A. T. Club took over the portion from Cheoah Bald to the Gorge. Now, we are to do supplemental clearing and marking, and will also put aluminum paint on the blazes between the official A. T. markers. The 61 workers who have done the work thus far know that it is fascinating, in a section which is replete with fine views. As a pleasing panorama, that from Cheoah Bald is second to none. At numerous points along the Cheoah Mountains and Yellow Creek Mountain there are superb views of the Great Smokies and other surrounding mountains, and alluring glimpses of beautiful Lake Santeetlah. The workers will be divided into four or five groups so that the whole distance can be covered in one day. Captains will be selected for each section. Since we have recently become more intimately acquainted with Benton MacKaye, originator of the Appalachian Trail idea, and Myron Avery, who has led in transposing Benton's dream into a reality, we will derive a greater interest from the maintenance of our two sections of the A. T. Our club is sponsor for the A. T. thru the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and from the Park to Cheoah Bald. 17
