  • 42 OUR NATIONAL MONUMENTS Betatakin is situated at an elevation of 7,000 feet, in a great cave 450 feet long with a maximum depth of 150 feet, in the side of a soft, red sandstone cliff which forms the walls of a most picturesque and beautiful canyon. The cave roof projects far out over the vil- Navajo ruins lage, which originally contained 120 rooms and occupied every foot of building space, but is so high that swirling storms have caused shrubbery to grow up to the very foundations of the ancient homes. Within the cave itself is a never-failing spring of excellent water.
