What a trip! Ten days of hilarious good times with singing in the bus, perhaps a square dance or two along the way when we stop for the night at tourists camps. All our own party, in the company of twenty- five or thirty of your best freinds, members of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. There will be no formality and if we wish we can wear hiking clothes from the time we leave until we get back. Of course a project of this magnitude will require a number of meetings to work out plans along in the spring. But for the sake of those who would like to plan ahead, we estimate the trip will take from eight to ten days, from about May 24, to June 3, and it has been very roughly estimated that the trip will cost from $50.00 to $60.00 per person. Can you imagine a 2000 mile trip lasting ten days, with so many congenial companions at such a moderate out-lay! We have said little about the Conference. We do not need to for all of us who spent any time at Gatlinburg last year know what it is. Leaders: GEO. F. BARBER (2-2105) JAS. E. THOMPSON (3-5952) // June 4th - 5th CAMPING DEMONSTRATION The Hiking Club in announcing this feature presents something entirely new, a camping demonstration tor you, and a friendly old pow-wow you will not soon lorget. This is your opportunity to learn of, or refresh your memory on, the etiquette of the trail, and to get the inside dope on how others provide for themselves in the great open spaces. Make your plans to take it all in. Were is the idea: Both the more experienced campers and those of us to whom the art is comparatively new want to know how the other fellow camps, what he takes, how he uses it, and how some make themselves so darned comfortable on the hikes. We want to review the things that make camping a joy and a 31

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1932 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
