  • March 29 RED TOP FROM GATLINBURG There is a proverbial saying that there was once a man in a forest who remarked to his companion, "I can't see the forest for the trees." Often this is true of hikers, who are unable to sec the range because of the magnitude of the mountains they are climbing. This is not true of the trip to Red Top. The hike is not hard, and one can enjoy to the utmost a series of magnificent views. Over to the right may be seen Mount LeConte, Round Top. and other peaks of interest. LeConte seems to he "just over the way"; it is so immense and so near. Only a short distance to the left of Red Top isj Big Ridge. From here can be seen Mount Guyot and Mount Lumadaha. There is also a good view of Pigeon Forge from this ridge. This would be an excellent place to make a contour map of the mountain section. On this hike we may walk at a leisurely pace along the road which follows the brook. Before climbing we may get a drink from the spring, and after many stops to view the scenery we shall come to the top of the ridge. Here is an excellent place to eat lunch. On one occasion we had snowballs for lunch, and yet were warm enough without our coats. Leave Saunders System at 8:00 A. M. Bring your lunch. Leaders: ELIZABETH HOUSTON (3-5027) and BESS GEAGLEY (3-7839). April 11 and 12 THUNDERHEAD FROM TREMONT Drive thirty-five miles to Townsend and leave the cars. Here take the auto-railway to Tremont which is the only means of transportation except by resorting to Shanks' ponies. At Tremont we shall stay in the hotel managed by Mrs. T. C. Fox. There are so many things to see on the trail that we ought to be on the way °V seven o'clock. 20
