  • 44 OUR NATIONAL MONUMENTS Temple Butte, preserved as a park by the town of Butte. Thus the area devoted to public use is larger than the monument itself. Within this monument is found a splendid collection of characteristic desert flora, including many striking examples of giant cactus (saguaro) and other interesting species of cacti, such as the prickly pear and cholla, locally known as "jumping cactus." This local name is derived from the ease with which sections break off, the thorny joints giving the impression of actually leaping at the passerby. Here and there are palo verdes, with their tiny leaves, and in the I'apago Saguaro and other Cacti sandy washes thickets of cat-claw and scrubby mesquite. The most generally prevalent plant is the creosote bush, a small, rounded bush of dark-green hue. There are also many fine examples of the yucca, whose flower-laden stems in the spring fill the desert air with their sweet perfume. But the desert's chief exhibit is the giant saguaro, from which the monument takes its name. This stately cactus rises in a splendid green column, accordion-plaited and decorated with star-like clusters of spines upon the edges of the plaits. The larger specimens grow
