  • He ordered a new election and it was held next time by ballot and I received 17 votes in the company and Crawford got 4 by Lt. Phillips voting for him himself. Phillips was the meanest looking white man you ever saw. He could not raise his head hardly. The men curses him for all the damn rascals that ever lived. After I was almost unanimously elected, they come and shook hands with me and said he (Col.) hoped that I would live to enjoy the honors that was due me for the bravery that I displayed. He also said that Phillips acted low down. I can't tell you all the particulars of it, but I come out the nicest you ever saw. I am now Lt. in the company, but I don't suppose that I will draw any back pay. If I do, I want you to come after it, but I am pretty certain that I will only draw from the time I was elected. I have to pay 10 dollars a month for my board. I want you to get Dobbins to make me just as nice a pair of calf skin shoes as he can and send them to me just a s soon as you can, No. 8 and high heels and nice every way. You have an idea what sort will suite me, Tins. I want you to send me two pair of drawers, two nice striped shirts with pockets on the outside of both of them, a good pocket handkerchief—I want them tomorrow on review, so fly round, if you please. I want them all soon. I want nice shoes and them large enough, No. 8. I don t want the shoes blunt. I want one pair of socks. Pap, I want you to come as soon as harvest is over certain, and bring me something to eat. Send me some fruit sooner if you can. Send my clothes soon. If you don't write more, I am going to quit. I want nice shirts, Tins, for I am Lieutenant now. Everything is quite here. G. J. Huntley
