not. From all accounts the Yankies has a large force at Fredericksburg which is in five miles of our camp but whether they will attack us or not I am unable to tell. We got orders this morning to have all our clothes packed up in our napsacks and be ready to march at five minutes notice. But I can't tell you where we will go. Our general keeps that to himself. I don't suppose that our Colonel knows where we will go. The general opinion is that our forces is going to attack the Yankies at Fredericksburg but that is not my opinion. I don't know, but I think we will be sent to Richmond in a few days. There was fighting all day yesterday nine miles below Richmond in the James River but I have not got the particulars of the fight yet. It is pretty much given up by all men about here that the Yankies will take Richmond in a few days. But I have no doubt but what they will have a bloody time yet before they get Richmond. But I believe myself that they will take it after some hard fighting. If it was not for their gun boats they never could take that city,

In this letter of May 20, 1862, G. J. Huntley writes his friends about his journey to Spotsylvania County, Virginia where his camp is now within sight of the Yankies. There are skirmishes every day between the pickets, but no regular engagement yet. His camp is ready to leave on five-minutes notice, but he doesn’t know where they will go. He speaks about the camp conditions and says that he saw his cousin George Wilkie about two miles away in another Regiment. This letter is one of a series of 46 that Huntley wrote home while serving in the 34th Regiment of N. C. Volunteers during the Civil War.
