Baltimore 1, 3, 19 Mr. Horace Kephart of All OutDoors Magazine Dear Sir, I have been reading your articles in “All Outdoors” with great interest and pleasure and feel from the extent of your knowledge you will be able to tell me about my specialty buy: the firearms made in the South 1861-5. I have a small collection of some 250 odd pieces with 40 of Confederate origin. Are you conversant with breech loading c+b carbine stamped “C.S.”

In a letter to Horace Kephart on January 3, 1919, Edris Bowie inquires into Kephart's knowledge of firearms with regards to Bowie's collection of roughly 250, all made in the South from 1861 to 1865. Several features within the collection including stamps on the brass frames of the guns remain a mystery to Bowie, and he hopes Kephart can provide some insight into them. Bowie speculates that the Henry rifles in the collection were used by the 14th Missouri Regiment, or Birge's Sharpshooters, in the Battle of Shiloh, in 1862.
