Horace Kephart to Morve L. Weaver, April 18, 1914

  • wcu_kephart-311.jpg
  • In this letter to Morve L. Weaver of Visalia, California on April 18, 1914, Kephart lists his publications on the history of the American rifle, and discusses the difficulties that would be encountered in publishing a complete book on the subject.
  • Bryson City, N.C. April 18, 1914. Morve L. Weaver, C.E., Visalia, Cal. Dear Mr. Weaver: Your letter of the 7th came when I was up in the mountains on my first 1914 trout fishing trip, and I did not get it until my return. My writings on the history of the American rifle comprise: 1. An article on "The Rifle in the Revolution," Magazine of American History, Sep., 1890. 2. Another on "The Birth of the American Army," illustrated by Frederick Remington, Harper's Magazine, May, 1899. Today I have no copy of either of these. You might pick up either by advertising in the Publisher's Weekly, New York. 3. A long series in Shooting and Fishing (now Arms and the Man) of Washington, March 5, 1896, to March 31, 1898. This series closed on the outbreak of the Spanish-American War, when I became engrossed in other matters. This series was made up largely of quotations from original documents (contemporary records, both manuscript and printed, of the colonial and revolutionary jirv i ml ) jjjpjfljlii which I had collected for years before I wrote a line on the subject. I have this series complete in a scrap-book. None of this has appeared in book form. Every now and then someone writes asking me to reprint the stuff in book form. I shall not do so until I have an opportunity to spend two or three months in the Library of Congress and the State Department delving through manuscript material that I know is there, in order to make my work complete. This would be a labor of love, since the book, no doubt would hardly pay expenses, and might not do half so much. But if the time comes when I have money and leisure to pursue the search, it will be a great pleasure to do it.
