David Abercrombie to Horace Kephart, December 27, 1915

  • wcu_kephart-1657.jpg
  • In a letter to Horace Kephart on December 27, 1915, David T. Abercrombie explains their snake bite kit cannot be purchased from his company because new laws require a doctor’s prescription to buy poison and a pharmacist to distribute the drugs the kit contains, including strychnine. If Kephart wishes to purchase the kit, Mr. Abercrombie recommends sending a doctor’s prescription and a pharmacist from Burroughs-Wellcome will send the kit to him.

Kephart, Bryon City, N. 0. My dear Mr. Kephart: Your kind favor of the 24th instant duly received. The Snake bite outfit can no longer be bought here locally as just an Outfit. Our new laws that prevent the sale of any poison without a Physician*s prescription prevents our selling it as an Outfit and it also must be bought from a licensed druggist. Nevertheless we do sell the outfit in this way; First you must know 'what the outfit consists of and I believe that the most up-to-date information shows that the kit is about all that is necessary; First a Hypodermic Syringe, second a via^Permanganate of Potash in Hypodermic tablets; and third Strychnine in Hypodermic tablets. Its use is based on the determined fact that the insdct and reptile venom is not a poison in itself but has the action when infused in the blood of lowering the heart action very rapidly and does not decompose the blood as a real poison does. The permanganate of Potash coming in contact with the poison neutralizes it very'rapidly and the strychnine keeps up the heart action, I believe that you can get these remedies locally through your own Physician and druggist, but if you want us to get it for you we would have to have you send us your physicians prescription and we would send it to Burroughs-Wellcome and they would have a licensed druggist send it to you. I have talked to a great many people on this subject and I believe this is about as effective a remedy as one can have. I am very much interested in the Warner Objective sight, a new sight for rifles and I am going to try to get a pamphlet to send to you shortly. Hoping this is satisfactory and with best wishes for the Season, believe me, Yours sincerely, DAVID T. ABERCROMBIE CO, I ident. Presi- DTA.MW jff
