  • THE CULLOWHEE YODEL Ocie M. Dellinger (Columbian) Cherryville, North Carolina Vice President, Columbian Society, 1926-27; Secretary, Glee Club, 1926- 27. "A true friend is more precious to the soul than all that which is inherited beneath the sun." Here's to the laughter of Ocie, long may it last. Evidently she knows the old saying, "Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone." They say that "Shorty" is generous with her smiles, that is, with the opposite sex. Nevertheless we all love, humor, and honor her. Something seems to whisper in my ear that the world holds in store for her the things we all hope for but few attain. Wherever she goes, we wish for her great success. May Dowtin (Columbian) Troy, North Carolina Student Council Member, 1926-27; Member, South Carolina Club, 1926- 27. "Rare compound of oddity, frolic, and To relish a joke and rejoice in a pun." May is like a piece of velvet, rub her the right way and she shines, but woe be unto the one who makes her mad. May is a girl of sterling qualities, and has a strong personality. She is one of our South Carolina friends, but Western North Carolina appeals to her in more ways than one. She may follow the career of a school teacher, but it seems rather doubtful at present. Here's to you, old dear; you MAY be our friend at present, but we want no DOWTIN. Lazelle Henson (Columbian) Sylva, North Carolina Student Council Member, 1925-26; Chaplain, Columbian Society, 1926-27; Senior Play; Glee Club, 1926-27. "True to her words, and her work, and her friends." When one has won the friendship of Lazelle, she has won something worthwhile, for "to know her is to love her." Although she is a conscientious worker, she still believes in fun and all varieties of sport. In Lazelle we find the combination of sunshine and laughter. We know that the class would not be complete without her. And for Lazelle we are wishing the things that make life worth living. Theresa Taylor (Columbian) Rutherfordton, North Carolina Member, Senior Executive Committee. "She's sweet of disposition, She's loving, wise, and kind; She is full of true affection, She can not be defined." Theresa is a girl you have to know to appreciate, for she is so quiet and unassuming that many of her excellent qualities pass unnoticed by the casual observer. She moves about with poise and gracefulness that gives evidence of a striking personality. And to those who know her best, she is a most lovable girl. She is a great nature lover as is evidenced by the many flowers growing in her room, and also by "Tommy," her pet crawfish. We have the utmost faith in her continued success. Sudie Hunter (Columbian) Charlotte, North Carolina Vice President, House Government Association, 1926-27; Journalist, Columbian Society, 1925-26; Basketball Team, 1926-27; Senior Play; Member, Monogram Club, 1926-27. "She is like an April shower—full of fun and lots of laughter." Rah, rah, rah, three cheers for Sudie, the most athletic girl in the Senior class. If you want a basketball forward from whose hand the ball goes straight into the basket, take Sue. She is a girl with many good qualities, and the Class values her membership. She is just a real good girl and a real good friend to all who know her. We wish her much prosperity and good fortune in the practice of her chosen profession. Frances McCotter (Erosophian) Cash Corner, North Carolina Journalist, Erosophian Society, 1925-26; Student Council Member, East Carolina Club, 1925-27. "She's just that which is neatest, eompletest, and sweetest." Frances hails from East Carolina, which she says is the best place in the world. But we believe that she rather likes our mountains, even if her heart is back East. Her lofty character and high ideals have made her a matchless and trustworthy pal to all. Here's hoping "Pamp" will banish the idea of teaching a "one-pupil" school so soon after graduation. But she knows her own mind and will have her own way, so who can tell? Ada Moss (Erosophian) Glenville, North Carolina Student Council Member, 1926-27; Member of Debating Team, 1926-27; Class Historian; Member, Epworth League, 1926-27. "Take life easy; never do now what you can leave until tomorrow." Ada, why yes, she is all fun and jollity. Good in everything, and lucky is the girl that captures Ada's place at Cullowhee. If all the students at this dear place were typical Adas, what a wonderful place it would be. Ada is a girl who is watched over by that enchanted guardian Luck. Anyone is blessed who possesses her fine qualities. Happy, gay, never a care, smiling and laughing all the while makes Ada a desirable person to have about. Success lies before her as a teacher Frances Hinson (Erosophian) Salisbury, North Carloina Corresponding Secretary, Erosophian Society, 1926-27; Member, Glee Club, 1926-27; Student Assistant Librarian, 1926-27; Vice President, Epworth League, 1926-27. "A smile for all, a greeting glad; A lovable jolly way she had." A walking calendar, that's Frances. She has a smile for everyone and she even donates a grin to some. Many will be the tears shed when Frances bids dear Old Cullowhee farewell. Even Miss Gladstone will hate to see her go. She is always ready and willing to help those in trouble, and she usually succeeds in finding them. Frances is the kind of girl in whom we can always depend. Here's to you, old dear, and we all wish for you that should be yours. Cora Lee Mock (Columbian) Cherryville, North Carolina Student Council Member, 1926-27; Vice President, Student Council, 1926-27; House Proctor, 1926-27; Senior Play; Department Superintendent, Epworth League, 1926-27. "You can live without knowledge, you can live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks." A good cook, did you say? Why sure that's Cora, and seamstress too. She certainly knows the way to reach a man's heart and his pocketbook too, for she has a string of admirers that would reach from here down to Johnston County. Cora as a student is splendid and fine, and when serving as an officer she's always in line. We find in her a combination of sunshine and laughter, and her future—well its promising whether she teaches a large number or just one. Edna Robinson (Erosophian) Cherryville, North Carolina President, Erosophian Society, 1926-27; President, House Government Association, 1926-27; Department Superintendent, Epworth League; Journalist, Erosophian Society, 1926- 27; Member of Yodel Staff; Member, Glee Club, 1926-27; Senior Play; Class Prophetess. "Genius is the ability to do good If you desire tact, character, and ability, you will find that Edna has these qualities. We can truly say that we are glad she was one of us, for her pleasant manner, her smiles, and her warm friendship have meant much to us. We wonder what C. S. N. will do without Edna, for she is a leader that is sincere. We regret that she could not be with us in our Junior year, but in this one year we have learned to love her. Wherever she goes we wish her great success. Mrs. Bird: I wouldn't marry the best man breathing if I had my choice Bonnie Teague (Erosophian) Waynesville, North Carolina Member, Haywood County Club; Member, Epworth League. "Still water runs deep may be said of this lass, But you'll find she's not asleep when she shines in class." Bonnie is quietness itself, but beneath that one may easily perceive her sincerity and ability in doing what she once begins. Bonnie, we shall long remember and love you, for your kindly smile and helping hand often made a heavy load light. We are sure that no matter what you start out to do, you will succeed, because you have the secret of success ever with you—that of serving always in the cause of right. Annie Thomas (Erosophian) Wendell, North Carolina Treasurer, Erosophian Society, 1926-27; Member, East Carolina Club; Chairman, Executive Committee of Senior Class; Senior Play. "Quiet in nature, jolly in play; Annie is a dear sweet girl in every way." Annie is a true friend and one of the most loyal members of the Class. She believes in having a good time, but she doesn't let this interfere with her work. She is sometimes accused of being sarcastic, but her friends understand that she does not mean any harm by her bits of sarcasm. Annie is one of our prettiest girls and one of the most popular with boys and girls. She is a good worker in Society in any capacity called upon. She never shirks where duty is concerned. We all wish her much success in life. C. C. Williams (Erosophian) Canton, North Carolim Vice President, Erosophian Society, 1926-27; Member, Epworth League. "It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives." Mr. Williams has a great ambition to become a minister, and to this end he labors with untiring efforts. He is not generally regarded as a lady's man, but he is one that keeps the girls guessing. Perhaps Mr. Williams's greatest asset is unselfishness, or the desire to be of service to others. He is ever ready to be a friend and aid those in need of assistance. He has a smile and a word of cheer for everyone. The many friends he has made here will watch with pride his progress through life. Josephine Safrit (Erosophian) Rockwell, North Carolina J Secretary, Erosophian Society, 1926-27; Student Director, Girls' Glee Club; Chorister, Epworth League. "It's the songs you sing and the smiles you wear That's making the sunshine everywhere." All the world loves a song bird; that's why we all love Joe. She migrated from the central part of the state, and came to Cullowhee to gain a little more knowledge. She goes about her work singing all the while, whether conscious or unconscious we cannot always tell. You will know her by watching for the last person to arrive. She will have a good time though, and walk right in with a smile. We know she will succeed in her work, for anyone who likes to sing as she does could not fail in her life's profession as a public school music teacher. Railroad Porter: Your 3:40, lady.
