P. D-l-P RR.CO _ %xwm^ ^//l^X?yt^ '.■><Xn&ij2 Meeting at Asheville on Nov.22. Mr.1.P.McKissick, Battery park Hotel, Asheville, N.C. My dear Mr.McKissick, I have your favor of the 9th instant, with reference to the proposed meeting on November 22. I am sure nothing would be pleasanter to me personally than to visit Asheville at this or any other period between now and April first; but I fear it will be impossible for me to attend this meeting on 22nd instant, as my time is fully taken up until at least the first of December. I trust that the meeting will be largely attended,and accomplish much for North car°linaj where it seems to me a park somewhat similar to the Yellowstone could very well be established with great success. Of course you have not the geographical and physical phenomena that are contained in Yellowstone Park, but you have opportunities for providing a preserve for a great many animals which will gradually become extinct as the country becomes more^civilized Yours truly,

In 1899, the Parks and Forestry Committee of the Asheville Board of Trade sent out this letter to representatives of six states announcing an upcoming meeting. The meeting, scheduled for November 9th, was held for the purpose of organizing an association to promote a national park in the southern Appalachians. Indeed, the Appalachian National Park Association was formed at that meeting, held in the Battery Park Hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. More than 70 letters included here are responses to, or forwards of, the initial letter.
