  • UP AND DOWN THE TRAIL By David J. Guy The "Truck Trail Traverse," the TTT series for short, will be initiated November 16 at Rockfish Gap, Va. This will mark the beginning of a 267-mile hike to the Susquehanna River above Harrisburg, Pa. A large number of aspirants are expected, at least for the initial occasion. Some will hike all the way, some will hike just what they can and ride in between, and still others who find it impossible to go on all trips of the series are welcome to go when the dates are suitable. Here is offered an opportunity for Club members to see the less frequented parts of the Potomac Section of the famous Maine-to-Georgia Appalachian Trail. For the initial November trip Henry B. George will be leader. The plan is as follows: the party will travel via the Deluxe Truck and some private cars to an attractive tourist camp near Swift Run Gap; there to lodge Friday and Saturday nights. The proprietor of the camp will buy, cook, and serve the food, using the Club's camping equipment. Cabin* have electric lights and running water but no heat, so bring sleeping bag or an extra blanket. A large heated cottage will serve as a dining room. The first leg of the TTT series will be hiked Saturday, November 16, over open-topped mountains with supei'b panoramic views immediately north of Rockfish Gap. The hiking distance will be about 11 miles, after which the party will return to the tourist camp at Swift Run Gap. The second leg will be hiked Sunday, November 17, ending at the Doyle River Shelter, hiking distance about 14 miles. The truck will shuttle between camp and Trail, and Sunday dinner will be had at camp. Ths party will leave Club Headquarters Friday evening and return late Sunday evening. Total -t;ost, $11. Watch for the reservation notice. The third and fourth legs of the traverse will be hiked December 7 and 8, with the same tourist camp as a base. Jack Hess will be leader. The TTT series is not a marathon; distances are moderate and gauged by the amount of climbing required. On these first two trips there will be time to enjoy the beauty of mountains and valleys, the deep hollows and sharp ridges, to see their naked shapes, for the leaves will be down come late autumn. And there will be fellowship, tall stories, good food, and "harmonee-ee.'' Omitting the cold months of January and February and the hot months of July and August, the plan is to complete the traverse in two years. A tentative schedule follows: 1* Rockfish Gap to Turk Gap crossing, 11 miles November 16, 1946 2* Turk Gap to Doyle River Shelter, 14 miles November 17, 1946 3* Doyle River Shelter to Powell Gap, 12 miles December 7, 1946 4* Powell Gap to I'ocosin Shelter, 13 miles December 8, 1946 5 Pocosin Shelter to Spitler Knoll Overlook, 13 miles March 1947 6 Spitler Knoll Overlook to Thornton Gap, 15 miles April 15)47 7 Thornton Gap to Little Hogback Mountain crossing, 13 miles May 1947 8 Little Hogback to Chester Gap, 13 miles June 1947 9 Chester Gap to Rock Spring, 14 miles September 1947 10 Rock Spring to near Snickers Gap, 14 miles October 1947 11 Near Snickers Gap to Keys Gap, 14 miles November 1947 12 Keys Gap to Crampton Gap, 14 miles _ _ December 1947 13 Crampton Gap to Black Rock—Bagtown Road, 14 miles March 1948 14 Bagtown Road to Pen Mar, 14 miles April 1948 15 Pen Mar to Mt.
