  • Louisville, Ky., Courier-Journal: I cannot believe that the next Congress will fail to allow an appropriation to carry forward this great work. The Government has already set aside in Western reserves an area of more than 70,000 square miles, while there is not a single Government forest reserve in the East. Longansport, Ind., Joicrnal: Apart from the natural reasons, the eastern states are entitled to a National Park. Geneva, O., Times: The superb forests of the Southern Appalachian system are superior to 'those of any other section of the United States and its variety of hard woods and conifers is wonderful. Cleveland, O., Leader: It is claimed with reason, that such a park would not only be more accessible to the great majority of the American people than the Yellowstone park ever can be, but it would also be available as a place of resort all through the year It is true, fur-. ther, that the proposed Appalachian Park would contain far better specimens of typical American forest life than any which can be found in the Yellowstone Park. That is an important item to be taken into account. Knoxville, Tenn., Times: If the Government wants to make an appropriation to encourage both the aesthetic and the useful, it could not easily do a better thing than to establish this Appalachian National Park. Providence, R. I., Journal: There is but one such forest in America and neglect of the opportunity now presented of saving it may work irretrievable loss. The forests once destroyed, cannot be replaced. 24
