  • Legislation Secured Since the Organization of the Appalachian National Park Association November 22, 1899 Nov. 22, 1899—Appalachian National Park Association organized at Asheville, North Carolina. Jan. 2, 1900—Memorial of the Appalachian National Park Association presented to Congress and referred to the Committee of Agriculture. Apr. 17, 1900—Officers of the Park Association appear before the Committee on Agriculture presenting the cause of the Appalachian National Park Association. Apr. 21, 1900—Senator Pritchard introduced a bill praying for an appropriation of five thousand dollars for a preliminary investigation. Apr. 26, 1900—Senator Pritchard's bill asking for appropriation for investigation passed, become a law on«July 1st. Summer of 1900—The Government Forestry Bureau with the cooperation of the Geological Survey investigate the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Jan. 1, 1901—Secretary Wilson of the Committee of Agriculture sends report to Congress through the President regarding the preliminary investigation made. Jan. 19, 1901 — President McKinley presents Secretary Wilson's report with a special message to Congress recommending this report to the favorable consideration of the Congress.

  • This 32-page booklet is titled, “Appalachian National Park: Synopsis of work accomplished” since the founding of the Appalachian National Park Association. While the booklet is titled “fourth edition,” the first three editions have a different title and content. The first, second, and third editions are titled, “Reasons in Favor of the Establishment of a National Park in the Mountains of Western North Carolina.”
