  • a a Rachel Rae Hanes Staff Writer An organization rooted deeply in the history of Western Carolina Univer- sity, the Baptist Student Fellowship (BSF) is a Christian organization that welcomes the campus com- munity and surrounding area. It was originally part of the Cullowhee Baptist Church, where it began as the Baptist Student Union, but branched out into the Baptist Student Fellowship. The Campus Minister, Da- vid Stone, attended the Bap- tist Student Union while obtaining an education at Western Carolina. After graduating, the Baptist Stu- dent Union dissolved, and : 1ed to rediscover for campus worship every Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Home Base building, across from Tucks Tap & Grille on Central Drive. The weekly meetings usually begin with a home cooked meal prepared by members of the group. After dinner, the fellow- ship moves upstairs to participate in worship through music. A praise band plays while the lyrics are displayed on a screen for the congregation to follow along. After sing- ing, the group moves over to couches and chairs to study the Bible. Often times there are guest speakers and preachers that lead the Bible study, providing new faces and new outlooks to the group. BSF works to include anyone interested in faith or the fellowship. The fellow- ship encourages students that did not previously have faith to join them, as well as those who would like to grow in their faith. Rachel Oliver, Director of Students with the Baptist Student Fellowship, said their mission is, to point people to Christ in every- thing we do.. Accordingly, Megan Hammaker, a first-year student at Western Caro- lina, entered the fellowship to meet new people with similar beliefs to her own. BSF works to provide a supportive environment for students to ask questions about faith and grow from these conversations. The group is also very diverse in race, majors, age, etc. Jorge Arcos, a junior at Western Carolina, describes the fellowship as having enough variety where you can find your own group. The Baptist Student Fellow- ship is diverse and accept- ing. Each year BSF organizes a mission trip over spring break. In recent years, they have travelled to Charles- ton, S.C. to participate in various missions. One of these missions is to support the Low Country Orphan Relief, where students work to package necessities to be given to these children. Students typically receive a childs name and wish list, then they proceed to shop through the warehouse for each child. The orders are packaged and later _ delivered separately, as the nts working in this mission usually work be- ve There are also other mis- _ sion opportunities simulta- neously that students will be able to choose from once in Charleston. The spring break mis- sion is utilized as a bonding experience for the mem- bers as well. Rachel Oliver described it as a mission- cation. The members complete the majority of the service in the mornings and afternoons. During the late afternoon and evening, they are free to roam the beaches, explore the city and pass time together. The members often make bonds on this trip that last beyond the years of college. The Baptist Student Fellowship is also involved with students on campus. The fellowship participated in the annual Valley Bal- lyhoo at Western Carolina to welcome students back to campus. There are also mens and womens small Bible study groups avail- able by contact. Usually beginning at the start of the semester, the times of these groups are determined by the schedules of the students. The Fellowship also hosts dinner theater events, as they will on Feb. 24, 2018. The students provide musi- cal entertainment as well as dinner. Students who are in- terested in intramural sports can join teams through BSF. Oliver explains that the fellowship often uses in- dividual members gifts and talents to begin new events and groups. She urges new members to be open to iden- tifying and leading with nd the scenes and do not - interact with the children. about the Baptist Student their gifts. The Baptist Student Fel- lowship provides a means for students to take a break from classes, homework and lifes stresses. Along with providing a free meal and support from the entire group, the fellowship also has many opportunities for students take part in, including service and lead- ership opportunities. Their ultimate goal is to include others in their journeys of faith and therefore allow them to grow in the Chris- tian faith. In this fellowship, students should feel they are in a safe environment to ask questions and open up to other members.
