Volleyball team continues to fight through the season Jordan Freeman Junior Editor The weekend before fall break was, to put it mildly, a busy one for the womens volleyball team here at Western Carolina University. Not only did they face Mercer University on Friday, Oct. 14, but they also faced East Tennes- see State University on Saturday, Oct. 15, with both games taking place at Western Carolina. For both games, the ladies of the volleyball team did their best to make the Catamounts proud. Their skill and determi- Womens golf team welcomes new coac Madison Klein Staff Writer The Catamount wom- - ens golf team welcomed a new head coach in September of 2016. Well- qualified and highly experienced, Sara Ann McGetrick brought en- thusiasm and high hopes to connect with the girls and finish their season together. Alumnus to Furman University in South Car- olina, McGetrick played collegiate golf herself and eventually turned pro and played on the Ladies Professional Golf Association tour from 1986 to 1992. A natural leader and team player, McGetricks passion for golf and teaching con- tinues to live on in her nation saw victory for: the Friday game, but an unfortunate loss on Saturday. Starting off with Fri- days game, Mercer came in wanting to win, having lost their last couple of games. They had hoped to keep their win to lose ratio, which before the game was 10-7, on the positive. Western Caro- lina also came in wanting to win, as they them- selves had been having a string of losses. With a win to lose ratio of 7-12, the ladies of the team were ready to put their paws out and beat the Mercer Bears. Though it determination to develop the skills of young golf- ers. McGetrick, native to Spartanburg, South Car- olina, is no stranger to coaching collegiate golf, as she is the former head golf coach at Converse College in Spartanburg. She also has experience coaching at two high schools. According to her biography page on catamountsports.com, throughout her col- . legiate coaching years, McGetrick has rallied five tournament titles -with eight individual medalists from her team and led her team to an impressive third place finish at the Conference Carolinas Championship in 2014. may not be this way in the animal kingdom, the Catamounts slayed the Bears, winning the game 8 to 2. The top performers of the game were freshman Abigail Viet, who earned 20.5 points throughout the match, with sopho- more Alyssa Zupan and sophomore Moea Osbey both scoring 12.5 points throughout. With one victory under their belt, the womens volleyball team was ready to face the Buccaneers from East Tennessee State University. Having won their last four games before facing Leaving Converse Uni- versity was one of Mc- Getricks toughest career decisions. Being able to frame the program from scratch and continue to build it for four years, McGetrick was able to drive the program in the direction she wanted it. New doors opened when the position for a new Western Carolina Uni- versity head golf coach became available. The transition into the position for McGetrick was extremely fast, as she had little time to pro- cess the whole thing. The challenge of coming into anew position after the school year had started did not pose a threat to McGetrick. Allina week, she met with her new team, began prac- the Catamounts with a win to lose ratio of 13-6, ' the Buccaneers were ready to keep their win- ning streak. After just coming off of the heels of victory, the Catamounts were ready to be the ones that would end the Buccaneers winning streak and show them what happens when they decide to come face the Catamounts on their own playing field. Tragically, when the game came to an end, _the Buccaneers had fired their cannon shots and the Catamounts could not handle the blast. The Buccaneers won 8 to 1, tice right away and even completed their first tournament together. Needless to say, the team got to know their new head coach quickly and McGetrick immediately knew she had a great group of girls to work with. T really didnt know what to expect other than I knew what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to teach some things they hadnt been taught, not just with golf, but I believe everything you learn in golf can be applied to life, said McGetrick. McGetrick is extremely excited for the future of her team as a whole and each individual mem- ber. She is very proud that they work hard, are continuing their winning streak. Though the Cata- mounts lost, they still fought as hard as they could. The top perform- ers were Alyssa Zupan who scored 14 points through the entire game, junior Katie OConner scoring 12.5 and Abigail Viet scoring 10. Though they may have been defeated this game, the womens volleyball team will bounce back and show why other teams should fear the Cata- mounts. While most of us Catamounts were away from campus during open to changes and are willing to work on their weaknesses until they become their strengths. It is one thing to just ac- cept a great title, but it is another thing to accept a great title and still work on improving. Their improvement continued to shine in their playing skills as each tourna- ment went on. T have no doubt that this team can go far. Its fun to work with them. Theyre eager to learn, theyre open to learning, theyre smart, theyre mature and they have great ball-striking skills that let them accomplish what they want to ac- complish, McGetrick added proudly. McGetrick said her first year is going well fall break, the ladies of the volleyball team were getting ready for not one, but two games. They played at Samford University on Friday, Oct. 21 and then played at Wofford University on Saturday, Oct. 22. They will go on to play Univer- sity of North Carolina at Greensboro on Friday, Oct.28and Furman Col- -: lege on Saturday, Oct. 29, - both games being held at Western Carolina. With the combined skills of McGetrick and the individual skills each member of the team has, the team has every op- portunity to go far and Sara Ann McGetrick is the person to get them there. Winning is awesome, but at the end of the day, winning isnt everything, and these young ladies, I want them to make a dif- ference in the world and have the confidence they need to succeed, said McGetrick.
