  • BG june 21, 2013 SPORTS Allison Adkins Staff Writer Western Carolina University has been rebuilding their football. program under Head Coach Mark Speir. He has had only one season with the Catamount football program; how- ever, that does not mean that the experienced - coach has not made an immediate impact. Speir knows that hav- ing.a successful football program is all about the type of people you have working in and around it. You want to surround yourself with quality people, said Speir. One of the most essen- tial ways to get quality people in ones football program is through thorough, inquisitive and efficient recruiting. Tt is a long process; -you dont just see a good football player and then. go off. You have to do your homework on the individuals, said Speir. The recruiting process described by Western Carolina Universitys football program seems to be in depth, hitting alot of core areas that make a successful foot- ball player. _Speir said, The first thing we look at is film, and then we dere aie whether we think a play- er can play for us. Then _ we look at academic tran- scripts, and if they are to the caliber of Western - Carolina academics. We really have to evaluate if they will be successful in the University and obtain . a degree. The third and most important phase be- The Western Carolinian fore we would ever offer a scholarship is checking out the character, work habits and integrity of the young man. It is so. important that you get people who are going to represent your program and University well. By using the criteria above to evaluate each player whose film i is brought in by the coach- ing staff, each individual position coach picks the players that they want to work with. Then, the in- dividual position coaches take their picks to the offensive or defensive unit of staff, according to if their Boson is offense Inside WCU football recruiting Photo by Mark Haskett Coach Speir talks with Jerry Moore, head coach of Appalachian State, before start of last years game in Whitmire Stadium. or defense. Offensive and defen- sive staffs will:decide as a unit, will rank the players, and before they make the offer, the head coach checks them out, e said Speir. Although there are players of great talent overall in every rising freshman class, the foot- - ball coaches are looking for certain positions each year. It could vary year to year, Speir commented, Bach year, you have to look at who is presently in your junior class. If we have one quarterback that is a junior, we need to look for a quarterback in the recruiting class. You dont want to have to count on a true fresh- man. You want them to play for you to a year before you count on them asa starter. Once the players that the coaches want have been identified, they.are given the task of getting these quality players to come be a part of the Catamount family. Tt becomes a process of selling the players the University, not just the program, because they are spending four years of their life at Western, not just in the program. They learn not only on the football field but at Western Carolina Uni- versity, said Speir. The quantity of schol- arships the football pro- gram gives change year to year. Speir said, Asapro- gram, you can give, by the NCAA, 63 scholarships. We signed 25 this year. Every bees is different. Chad Miller, WCUs head womens soccer coach, said, Its a double edge sword for me. You hate to see quality teams and coaches leave the conference and also lose some of the rivalries that come along with that. The other side of that is it is exciting to bring in some new schools that have great soccer pro- grams and start a new tradition and rivalry. I dont think it changes much; the SoCon is a very competitive league that continually proves to be a great test to all involved in it, and I dont ference has some big changes coming in the next two seasons. The 2012-2013 season is the last time the Confer- ence is going to have the - College of Charleston as a competitor. Then, the upcoming 2013-2014 season will be the last season quite a few teams will be in the Conference. This season takes away the competi- tion of Georgia Southern, Appalachian State Uni- versity, Davidson Univer- sity and Elon University. _ In the 2014-2015 season, however, the Southern Conference will be welcoming three new universities to the even better as a league. SoCon Womens Basket- ball has a long tradition of success and we will be ready to take offi in cae coming years. Karen Glover, the head womens volleyball coach, said, I ee the individual institutions are doing what they feel is in their best interest. I, for one, amglad we are in the SoCon. I think itis a great league, and there is always good competition in volleyball, as well as the other sports. Although there are a lot of changes com- ing, Western Carolinas athletic programs, such as the track and field and mix. Southern Conference Commissioner John. Lamarino said, The addition of these three institutions will solidify the Southern Conference -and ensure our position as a vibrant league with a bright future. We are - delighted to invite three quality institutions, two of which are returning to a home they previously enjoyed for many years. Western Carolina Universitys coaches had many opinions about the changes coming in their Conference competition. Larry Hunter, head mens basketball coach, said, Personally, I hate to see teams leaving- our conference. Each institution has to evalu- ate their own situation and make decisions that they deem best for them. * While we are losing some good basketball teams, VMI, Mercer and East Tennessee State all* have very good bas- ketball programs, The Southern Conference has been a great confer- ence for a long time, and I am positive it will continue to thrive and do well. We have devel- oped a very competitive basketball program - Mercer it keeps the talent pool in the conference very strong, and it will continue to be a great test for all of us. James Clift, head womens softball coach, agreed that the league would see a shift in the strength of the league. *Pm sorry to see the _teams leaving the confer- ence. One of the things I learned in my first two years here is the So- Con is a strong softball conference. You hate to see our stronger teams leave. On the other hand, Iam sure we will bring in some strong schools, said Clift. Danny Williamson, the head track and field and cross country coach, said, That is a decision that those schools have made based upon what they feel most meets the needs of their vision for their ath- letic departments at their respective institutions. Karen Middleton; the ~ head womens basketball coach, sees the change as an optimistic opportu- nity for growth. SoCon Womens Basketball continues to grow in strength. Change isnt always easy, but change can also mean growth, said Middleton. The con- ference was as strong as it has been since our arrival to Western their own team and not worrying about how the changes in the confer- ence will affect their individual teams. Tt has no bearing on what we do. Our goals and vision of our pro- gram will remain the same. We will continue to do what we do and will always have the same goals, said Williamson. From a coaching perspective, I am focused on the things we can control our team. We are focused on the things we can do to be better in- dividually and as a team. We have a great group of _ players who are working hard to be their best, said Glover. The Womens pauken _ ball program at West- ern Carolina is looking forward to what the changes in the Southern Conference mean for their team personally. Middleton said, The changes in the SoCon are a great opportunity for growth and improve- ment for everyone, specifically, for our team because we have a young team. It is no secret we have been rebuilding at WCU. We are building our program the right way with great charac- ter young ladies that do extremely well academi- cally and compete hard on the court. We are really looking forward to tak- ing bigger steps forward and putting ourselves in a position to compete for a SoCon championship. Unfortunately, with the changes in the Southern Conference, Appalachian State University will no longer be in the same con- ference.as WCU, potential- . ly nullifying the rivalry with the Mountaineers. Overall, however, the Southern Conference is happy with the changes in teams in membership. Commissioner Lama- rino said, Our mem- bership is excited about rekindling old rivalries and establishing new ones. Most importantly, we've been able to grow while not extending our geographic footprint to an extreme extent. . Kast Tennesee State University and Mercer University will be com- ing from the Atlantic Sun Conference. The , Virginia Military Insti- tute will come from the: Big South Conference. The College of Charleston and Elon University will move to the Colonial Athletic As- sociation. Appalachian State University and Georgia Southern will change to the Sun Belt _ Conference. Davidson ~ will be moving to the Atlantic 10 Conference.
