  • A6 September 28, 2012 SPORTS Dodge ball returns in annual PEAKS Tournament By Laura Odom Staff Writer There should always be time in our lives to relieve stress and create camaraderie between strangers. The an- nual PEAKS Dodge Ball Tournament is just a time. When asked what she. thought of the Dodge Ball Tournament, held . Sept.25, a spectator stated, [It].is a great way to bring them all together to have fun ina healthy environment. As the teams were chosen and more people trickled i in the Reid gym, a pick-up game of Ultimate Frisbee be- gan creating a relaxed atmosphere before the. game. Even as the com- petition heated up, there still remained an air of i _. sportsmanship as the peat continued. _ After gathering all the different teams together, seven in all, the two men - officiating went over the _ extensive rules involved with dodge ball. Then the individual games began, and the competi- Hon grew fierce. Each match quickly The PEAKS annual Dodge Ball Tournament was held in Reid Gym on Sept. 25. A look at Intramural sports iby Corvin Parker : PontRbuting Writer Unknown to many new students, Western Carolina University has afun way for students who like to stay active to get involved: Intramural sports. Intramural sports are sports organized by the school to be played by any student who wants to play. The Intramural Sports Office believes that participation in Intramural sports is a positive, healthy experi- ence that fosters health benefits and provides enjoyment to our partic- ipants, stated the Par- ticipant Guidelines from - the Participant Hand- book on Western Caro- linas website. Abusive language, poor attitude and manipulation of the rules to further winning are not just part of the game. What is part of the game are the simple satisfaction of playing and the interdependence of teamwork, improving fitness and enhancing friendships. . Students often find In- tramurals to be a relax- ing and challenging way to constructively use their time which escapes became two-on-one or three-on-one almost in- stantaneously. It was not just the players dropping and dodging the balls as they were flying by, but the spectators as well were caught up in the - madness that is dodge ball. The teams cheered on their competition con- stantly rooting for un- derdogs in a match even when that same team would be their opponents in the next match. Each of the players in the tournament went on the court to have a good time and enjoy the company of their friends. Layton Turner, a freshman, said, Dodge pall is cool. It was a way for a bunch of us to get together and have some fun. The tournament is a wonderful way to cul-- . tivate community and friendship, which are | essential to the Bown of students. The winner of this | years tournament was a group of young men from the fifth floor of Scott Residence Hall. To attain the champion- ship title, they had to - eliminate some of their them from the pressures of school. Intramural sports also increase confidence, as Jonathan Johnston, the assistant director of In- tramural sports at West- ern Carolina, stated. There are some students who have never caught a pass fora touchdown, and there is a certain confidence that comes from that, which Intramural sports pro- vides, said Johnston. Intramural sports also. provide a way to meet friends and be social | among diverse groups of people. Because Intra- mural sports involve so many people with many different lifestyles, it offers ways to increase who you meet, who you become friends with and could possible open your eyes to things never experienced before . - In order to play, you must either be a stu- dent, faculty or staff at Western Carolina University with a valid WCU Cat Card. If you want a domestic part- ner to play who is not a student, there are additional requirements (see the Campus Recre- ation Center for more - information). To sign up for any Intramural The Western Carolinian hall mates, but each of the players responded to this with wonderful sportsmanship by cheer- ing them on throughout the competition. The winning team included the fifth floor Residents Assistant Caleb Griffith, and his residents Trevor Woodworth, Hayden Cairns and Tyler Harri- son. Each member of the winning team worked extremely hard through- out each of the matches working to prove their teams excellence. Griffith said, Asa returning participant in the PEAKS Dodge ball Tournament, my experiences have always been great and incred- - ible. And I just want to take a moment to remind everyone that we are all winners here. This is an opportunity to get out of our rooms to have fun in a safe and healthy envi- ronment with a little bit of friendly competition. Friendly competition and fun were evident throughout the entire tournament. Each team worked to make sure the rules were followed, and every team was cheered on towards victory.
