  • March 23, 2012 WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page B-2 CAMPUS TEE Corn hole and corn dogs: Students, alumni react to new tailgating policy FILE PHOTO, | A draft of WCU: 5 revised a policy extends tailgating hours by 30 minutes to three-and a-half hours at kickoff of a football game. baleen Gray, Staff Writer In our last issue, the new Western Carolina University tailgating policy draft was released. The changes to the tailgating policy call for ex- tending tailgating by 30 ad- ditional minutes before foot- ball: games, reserving three spots total instead of six spots per game, allowing sale of official WCU merchandise ' during tailgating and annu- ally reviewing the tailgating _ policy. - he With the upcoming chang- -es for this years . football _season, students and alumni have several different opin- ions and reactions. : I hope the new policy. helps students, come to more games since more people and organizations can _ tailgate, but ultimately it is up to the football team as to who will show or not, said le a freshman. Jason, a rising junior, said, Ym looking forward to go-. ing to more games next year and really hope our team pulls out some wins. I would definitely be up for more tail- gating with longer hours to support our team. Another rising junior, Chris, said, I will be out there pulling for WCU at tailgating _ with my friends. I hope to get a spot for most of the games and gril) out like we usually do. Its fun to get together before the games and then go watch the Cats play. This new. policy will definitely help. It will make football tailgating a lot bet- ter and should get a lot more people to turn out to tailgat- ing with three spots being reserved instead of six. Al- lowing the extra 30 minutes of tailgating will be good for this football season with . some of the games starting at 3:30, said SGA President TJ Eaves. Eaves also served on the Tailgating Task Force and voted for these changes on the Board of Trustees. WCU alumni _ also: weighed in on the new -tail- gating policy. Michael, a 2009 gradu- ate, said, I would love to see baseball tailgating brought back. That was one of my favorite memories at WCU. Tailgating should be more open for students. Lisa, a 2002 graduate, said, I really miss tailgat- ing at WCU and hate that its changed to where you have to pay to tailgate now. Tailgat- ing should be free to support WCU and the Catamounts. WCU needs more support and paying to tailgate, no matter how many spots there are, is not going.to get people - " to support the sports. The issue of baseball tail- gating is a continued conver- sation with a separate task force. Eaves is in favor of baseball tailgating and said it should not be abandoned. There could also be a tailgat- ing forum coming up spon- sored by SGA. to. review tail- gating and get more student input. What do you think about tailgating at WCU? Let us know by emailing us or stop- ping by the SGA office to ex- press your views. The stu- dents are extremely proud of that level of community en- gagement. Internships occur at over 100. human service agencies in the seven western coun- -ties, with most in the Cullo- whee/Sylva or Asheville ar- eas. Professional learning at the agencies encompasses the wide variety of professional , around U.S. practice available to social workers. The students com- plete internships at schools, hospitals, nursing homes, : behavioral health agencies, homeless shelters, agencies, community agen- cies, domestic violence agen- cies, guardian ad litem agen- cies and many more. In each setting, they serve clients with care, respect and will develop professional skill. The national theme for Social Work Month is hope.
