Cantler enacting role of athletic Ryan Alexander, Sports Editor Fred Cantler was enjoying his retirement from Western Carolina University. After 33 years of working in the athletic department, he retired last year and had no plans of com- ing back. That all changed on Tuesday, Oct. 25, when he agreed to take over as head of West- ern Carolina athletics in the wake of the dis- missal of Chip Smith, who had been athletic director since August 2004. Cantler, who will serve as interim athletic director until a per- manent replacement is found, was also the in- terim athletic director before Smith was hired. Cantler told The Western Carolinian that he took the job because of his love for the uni- versity, and that he did not take the job with a long term stint in mind. A search for a long term athletic director will begin this month, and will be a nationwide search. Chancellor David Belcher corroborated this statement, saying that Fred is not inter- ested in the permanent position, and a search is forthcoming. Cantler said that while he is in the role of athletic director he is enacting operations with a sense of urgency. He commented on the changes on the foot- ball staff on Monday, Oct. 31 when defensive coordinator Matt Pawlowski was released as _ a time to move forward. When asked about head football coach Dennis Wagners job se- curity, he said that He (Wagner) is our foot- ball coach. PHOTO BY KALEN QUINN director with a sense of urgency Cantler added that the decision to award Wagner a contract extension, which keeps him at the helm of the Catamounts though January 2014, was not my decision. Chancellor Belcher could not comment on if Chip Smith was fired due to the contract ex- tension that he awarded Coach Wagner, say- ing it was a personnel issue. Cantler said that his goal as interim athletic director is to make for an easier transition, to help the athletic department be prepared when the permanent AD is found. He said that the athletic department has good coaches and good people, and that he wants the athletes to have a good overall experience. The change at athletic director came short- ly after a prominent article in the Asheville Citizen-Times by Keith Jarrett, calling for the dismissals of both Chip Smith and head foot- ball coach Dennis Wagner. Both Chancellor Belcher and Cantler denied any relationship between that article and the personnel chang- es, with Belcher saying, it was not a factor, he (Jarrett) is one of many people with many different opinions. Only time will tell if this change in lead- ership of the WCU athletic department will have an effect on team performance across the spectrum of athletics. The recent changes within the football staff have people wonder- ing if more changes are coming, especially as losses keep piling up and the 12 game in-con- ference losing streak is prolonged. ee season Middleton eyeing | - ~Ryan Michaud, StaffWriter Now entering her third year at Western Carolina University, womans head basketball coach Karen Middleton and the womens bas- ketball team are looking to rebound from last years disappointing season. We are going to have a much better sea- son this year, Middleton said confidently. The womens basketball team finished with an overall record of 9-22 last year and a conference record of 6-14. Middleton described last season as a re- building process. Our play was hard-nose and our defense was the strength of the tea, Middleton said. Unfortunately we were struck by injuries and illnesses all throughout the season, but we fought through them. Last season the senior point guard went down with a back injury, forcing freshman Rena Wakaman to step up. The team also lost . two critical senior players last year, who both are now in graduate school. Middleton has expressed one goal this year. Our goal is to win a championship. Every night thats what we play for, Middleton said, Last year was a rebuilding process, but we have much more experience and we are ready to take off this year. The team has ten tiene players and four new ae Atioue the returning play- ers are sophomore guard Wakaman and se- niors KailaShea Menendez, Laura Sanchez, and Caitlin Hollifield. All those girls are extremely athletic, ver- satile, and play with tremendous heart and en- ergy every game, Middleton said. The strength of the team lies in its versatil- ey s Crossword Solution om | | ip) lex 8 | A pale 7 |e iS fe ial He tae = ee re a po sae! LF || a rg > | a ity this year. Our players are very versatile; they can play inside and out, Middleton said. They can shoot the 3s and drive it in the lane. We also play very hard, we compete every night and the team has great chemistry. In opposition, Middleton says their weak- ness lies in their lack to get a solid rhythm go- [6151914] 217111 3/8 s|el2tlelsfelsle 3[4|i]38}o|5]2 ifs{7}2[5/6 916/5|7|3]4 2{3[4}olsii S{9{3]6] 1/8 4|i}8{s|7|2 712\6{3]4}9 ing. : Pane We have yet to get a good rhythm or rou- tine going, Middletonsaid. We just have to build up our confidence and put ourselves in the position te win. In the way of competition this year, Mid- dleton said a lot of teams will be a threat in the Southern Conference. There is a lot of tough competition. App St. won the championship last year. Samford, Elon, and UNC Greensboro are all very tough schools, Middleton said. But we have a fa- vorable schedule this year so we are very ex- cited about that. The women had an exhibition game against Mars Hill last Friday, Nov. 5 to start the year with a 56-51 loss, but officially open their sea- son tonight (Nov. 11) at North Carolina Cen- tral and will have a 7 p.m. home opener on Monday against Charleston Southern. They open Southern Conference play in Cullowhee against Davidson at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 In all, the Lady Catamounts have a 29- game schedule that includes 14 home dates and match-ups with five teams that played in postseason.tournaments in 2011. Western Carolina will play eight of its first nine games in North Carolina. We ask for all the support of Western fans as they come out and show their pride and support for our team, Middleton said. 716 4/9 pe. 6/5 (217 913 on 3 T 4
