  • Page WESTERN CAROLINIAN August 20, 2010 CAMPUS; VIEWS Jay Strong | WC Intern According to the diction- ary, Socialism is defined as Any of various theories or systems of social organiza- tion in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized govern- ment that often plans and controls the economy, or a system or condition of soci- ety or group living in which there is no private property. In America there is much confusion over what Social- ism is, and whether or not its a good or bad form of govern- ment/economy. Many people jump to the conclusion that it is evil, because its similar to Communism. It seems some people think its fashionable to denounce Socialism, when they dont even know what it is, or how it would affect their lives differently from Capitalism. In a speech at Paris Ho- tel in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 5, 2009, former presi- dential candidate Howard Dean stated his opinion on the conflicts between De- mocracy, Capitalism, and So- cialism. He brought up a very valid point, He said, Theres not so Tucker Horne | Columnist This year Pm going to be helping readers learn some fly fishing techniques. My goal is to help you fearn how to more effectively fish the streams and rivers of Western North Carolina. Tl be pro- viding a section with whats hot, where I will discuss some good places to fish and some flies that will help you catch fish. Pil also talk about tips and techniques that will help you catch more fish. The Nantahala The Nantahala is a great river, It can be a zoo at times during the summer with the raft traffic jams. | seem to be able to put up with it no mat- ter how many times I hear are you catching anything? Ive even got a game I play to see how many rafts dont ask that question! Ive been told The Nanty holds more . trout per acre than any other river in North Carolina. The state record Brown Trout came out of the Nantahala River. Ive seen a lot of dif- ferent approaches to fishing the Nantahala at this time of year. | recommend a size 12- 16 Pheasant Tail, If you tie flies, tie in a green dot below the bead and add some extra weight to the fly with tung- sten. I recommend fishing a tandem nymph rig under your indicator of choice. I do not recommend fishing dry flies or terrestrials during the day on the Nantahala. Inside The Park The Great Smokey Mountains National Park holds some amazing fish. Often times on weekdays you can fish a large section of water without having any company. I recommend Cataloochee, Upper Abrams Creek. The Tuck (East Laporte to S. River Road at Highway 107) much of a debate on the Left anymore about Capitalism, whether we should have it or not, theres a debate about how to have it. I think Capi- talism is always going to be with us because Capitalism represents part of human nature....1 think the debate for the new generation is: In- stead of Capitalism or Social- ism, is: We are going to have both and which proportion of each should we have in order to make this all work. Its a much more sensible debate. It seems as if in times of great economic hardship, such as the Great Depression and the current Recession, the President of the United. States has to make tough de- cisions on economic policy for what they hope will be the best outcome. In the 1930s at the peak of the Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt introduced what he called the New Deal, a series of pro- grams and bills designed to boost the economy (national unemployment during the Depression reached as high as 25 30%). Many people see some of the programs signed into law under the New Deal as representing Socialism, such as Social Security and unemployment benefits. The ~ily Fishing Westeae Bisel ileal If you choose to fish the Tuckaseegee during this time of year, take care to not put | to much stress on the trout when playing them. Get them to your net quickly and release them quickly. Id recommend de barbing your hooks to aid in the release. Id recommend red bodied Caddis Emergers, small black wooly buggers and. green inchworms. If they dont like that, try throwing a bead head hares ear. Cullowhee Creek I cant give away all my secrets! I will tell you that I really like fishing heavy nymph rigs in the deeper pools with a stimu- lator as an indicator. You can hook into some big fish here without leaving cam- pus, they are wary though. Cherokee Trophy Water This water has gotten more challenging since it was first introduced a little over two years ago. The fish are getting smart, and big- ger! Right now I'd recom- mend small midges under something that will get the fishes attention. Try fishing a midge under something like a San Juan worm or a Y2K. Make sure you bring your camera! Fishing with an Curly Q Indicator When fishing tandem nymphs in fast water I al- ways like to fish and indica- tor. In competition fishing the leader must maintain a level taper or progressively get smaller from the butt sec- tion of the leader. One way to get around this rule is to fish a Curly Q indicator. These are homemade and can as- ily be tied into an existing leader, or one that you con- struct yourself. If you are constructing a leader yourself I recommend a section of 20 pound test monofilament that is the length of your rod, fol- New Deal also helped to re- peal Prohibition, created and | funded the Tennessee Val- ley Authority, giving many people jobs in much the same way President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to try to stimulate the economy. The debate between whether Socialism or Capital- ism leads to a healthier econ- omy rests on this question: | How much power should the | Federal Government have to regulate all sectors of econo- | my? Republicans argue that | President Obama is leading | the United States towards be- coming a Socialist state, and they point to his overhaul of | the health care and financia systems as evidence of gov-_ ernment take-over. If you would like to find | out for yourself whether or : not Socialism is more than just a dirty word, please | look at these websites to. make up your own mind: | hitp://www.associatedcon- | tent.com/article/1555214/ the_pros_and_cons_of__ http://www. associatedcontent.com/ar- | ticle/2357236/the_pros_and__ http:// sp-usa.org/, http://monthlyre- 4 g/, http o _ thing town to a mud puddle | between massive mountains. capitalism, cons_of socialism, view.org/S98einstein.php Tucker Horne fly fishing. lowed by a two-foot section of 15 pound test. Under the 15 pound test you can tie on your Curly Q followed by 4 feet of 5X tippet. Tie these sections together with a triple surgeons knot. I like to fish this set up with my rod par- allel to the water at shoulder level with the Curly Q just. above the water. If you are just arriving at the dining table, you missed out on the Sur- vival Guide for Freshman Year, building an ark and rain boots, Registration Night- mare Day, Humans vs. Zom- bies, The Catamount Flu, and more. For me, it was a crazy year full of laughs, tears, coughs, nutty professors, loyal friends, and long hours in the dorm room, and it was great to share it with you all. I am looking forward to let- ting you Catamounts inte my sophomore year as | take on Apartment Living for Dum- mies, or something like that. For those of you new freshmen who are just pick- ing up a newspaper for the first time since you were required to bring one in for a ninth grade history proj- ect, welcome to Cullowhee,. There is no place like it. I thought [ was moving from one small town to an- other, but it was more like moving from a small, bus- with the fly to your line hand. You will see the Curly Q Twitch when you get a strike. If you detect one immedi- ately try and set the hook, If you miss, flick the rod up stream, you mostly likely will not get more of a 6 foot drift. Making the Curly Q For the first month, I begged and pleaded to come home, I reacted the same way when Christmas Break was over. You must be feeling the same way. Please, take a deep breath, get on the Internet, and research where you are. If I were to draw you a map, the star is you, and you are here. Now, down the blue. dotted trail is a gorgeous hiking trail that wraps around Balsalm Lake ending in a large wa- terfall over a concrete dam. Follow the red triangles and you are at Wal-Mart (you will use this trail weekly). The purple paw prints take you to the animal shelter where you can reconnect with furry fac- es as dorms only allow fish. The yellow circles lead you to the lecal park with a huge playground, small creek, and plenty of room to run around for when the band is practic- ing on the UC lawn. You are in a beautiful part of North Carolina. Do not let the upperclassmen scare you with stories of how small and tiny everything is when just over the next hill another adventure is waiting on the horizon. Coming to college, I had no idea how much | would change. | knew | would be different when I walked I like to use 24 inches of 15 pound Green Amnesia. Experiment with other colors. I particularly like to combine Green and Yellow. Wrap the Amnesia onto a golf tee tak- ing care to ensure the line is laid flat on the tee. Tape the ends tight and boil in water for 15 minutes. Immediately remove and leave in a freezer for 24 hours. Some folks like Freshman Fifteen: Pound 14 and 15 through the door back in Little Town Overshadowed by Larger City, North Caro- lina in the summer, but not in October or Thanksgiving or on Christmas Break. Every time, Ma saw me again I was different in either a better or worse way as the events of college shaped me beyond recognition, even physically as I lost too much weight ex- plained in one Pound about my two week bout of bron- chitis. Is it bad to be so influ- enced by what is happening around you? There are parts of the new me that I enjoy. I am bolder, | am not afraid to speak my mind, my faith is stronger again. Then again, there are other new buds that sprouted on the tree that is me that need to be weeded out. College, it is like a river eroding away and chang- ing the streambed with | its all-powerful roaring waters, except you the streambed have the choice of whether you want to be eroded or not. Maybe the homebody should let the stream take away her shyness or the loudmouth should allow the waters to calm him into learning to listen. But, do not blame the waters for drinking under the age limit, drunk driving, us (Continued on page 7) Photo by Mark Haskett to color one side of the wraps with a sharpie marker before removing the indicator from the tee and tying into the leader.
