  • Page 13 WESTERN CAROLINIAN September 11, 2009 By Max Kath Staff Writer Quentin Tarantino can be a fairly polarizing director for most people. His films are often seen as something a notch higher than the average fan boy-waste of time (hello Zack Snyder) but can often be overlong and come off as a cocky aversion to the true nature of filmmaking as an art form. While I can certainly understand these perspectives, and even agree with some of them, the truth is that his films have become some of the most successful ever made as well as going on to influence a new generation of filmmakers that seem hell bent on copying his success. Pulp Fiction is often regarded as one of the best movies ever made and his debut movie Reservoir Dogs became an almost instant cult classic that spawned another group of imitators unto itself. So the question then becomes, does his newest movie. Inglorious Basterds stack up against the classics or does it fall into the failure category like the overlong and indulgent Death Proof? The truth is that it is not his best film, but it is still very entertaining with some great performances. The story behind the movie represents a group of American Jewish soldiers who call themselves the basterds that were dropped behind enemy lines in Germany . during World War Il. They have one job and one job only; to kill Nazis. The leader of this group is lead by Lieutenant Aldo Raine, a role played with enthusiasm by Brad Pitt, who is a man raised in the mountains of Appalachia whose hate for the Germans is matched _ only by his love of collecting the scalps of the Nazis he and his men DOCTORS AND THERAPISTS , RECOMMEND THAT KIDS CARRY NO MORE THAN WHAT PERCENTAGE OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT IN BACKPACKS? Their entire mission in Germany is to meet up with a German spy to obtain information on a suicide mission in which they could possibly single-handedly _ wine the war. This mission involves destroying a movie theater where high ranking German officials, including Hitler, are having a screening of the latest propaganda film from Joseph Goebbels. The theater is run by the films next major character, Shoshanah, a Jewish woman who escaped the massacre of her family at the beginning of the film. Knowing that high ranking officials will be at the screening, she devises her own plan to take out the entire theater by burning it down, Her character is played by Melanie Laurent with special detail to the intensity that would make- most other actresses quiver in their shoes. The third central character to the movie is a Nazi who is responsible for the massacre of her family at the beginning of the film, Colonel Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz who. gives, the best performance in the film by far. He is terrifying, weight of a backpack is evenly distributed across the back. ENGLISH: Pain SPANISH: Dolor ITALIAN: Dolore FRENCH: Douler GERMAN: Schmerz Did you know... When worn correctly (both shoulder straps in place), the charming, and hilarious all at once and often within the same scene. His performance is what anchors the film. When Tarantino starts to deviate from the main plot of the film and becomes infatuated with the dialogue used, Waltz is able to bring a certain amount of realism to his character that grounds even the most superfluous of Tarantinos dialogue sounds to be believable. His performance has_ rightfully already started generating Oscar buzz. On a basic entertainment level, the movie succeeds with flying colors. The action scenes are action- RIVER, ENDEAVOUR. SHE WAS ABOA: jj) RD THE SHUTTLE VERTEBRA packed, the suspenseful scenes keep you on the edge of your seat, and the comedic scenes are often-times hilarious. The cinematography and editing are top notch as are the sets, all of which help create a completely believable, world that the characters interact with. The only problem comes from the pacing of the film; it has a tendency to have some pretty big lulls in between the really important scenes that actually move the plot along. Tarantino has always had a tendency to have his characters get involved in long conversations with each other with no end in sight, While that worked for Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, it is really beginning to feel old and lazy when he clearly has the talent to do things that do not involve pop culture references or witty observations about mundane things in life. The bottom line: people should go see this movie if they are looking for an entertaining night at the movies or a night out with a group of friends. They can expect a movie that is not quite Pulp Fiction, but a hell of a lot better than Death Proof. Just dont go in thinking that Tarantino has started taking himself seriously. | 20.
