  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN August 7, 2009 SPORTS Former Catamount Sprinter Manteo Mitchell Concludes Showing From Staff Reports Much like the ending on the final day of many of his college competition weekends, former Western Carolina track & field standout Manteo Mitchell again found his way to a familiar spot at Icahn Stadium in New York City over the weekend (July 10 - 12). the podium. Running with the Southwest Sprinters Track Club out of Texas, Mitchell finished third in the 200-meter and fourth in the 400-meter dash as an individual, while running on the winning 4x400-meter relay squad and the runner-up Sprint Medley relay team at the 2009 USA Track and Field National Club Championships. He also ran in the 4x100-meter, but:did not finish the race as the squad fouled a hand-off exchange. The Southwest Sprinters Track Club includes 400-meter specialists Darold Williamson and Reggie Whitherspoon, as well as hurdler Jerome Miller, all whom competed collegiately at Big XJI-member, Baylor University. Through both text and E-mail correspondences over the weekend, Mitchell expressed his appreciation for all of the support from family, friends and Catamount faithful alike. He also mentioned that after his weekend performances, the Southwest Sprinters coaches had expressed an interest in having him join their squad and relocating to Texas. The Southwest Sprinters Track. Karen Middleton Announces Assistant Womens Basketball Coaches By Jada Bratton Sports Editor Western Carolina womens head basketball coach, Karen Middleton, who has taken over this year after the departure of former head coach Kellie Harper to N.C. State, recently announced her assistant coaching. staff. The Lady Catamounts will jumpstart its season with an all female coaching staff which includes head Coach Karen Middleton and assistant coaches Treka McMillian, Jonelle Streed, and Hilary Beck. Coach Middleton already had these women in mind upon taking the position at Western Carolina. The job openings were posted for some time before Middleton announced her staff. With a prior knowledge of their coaching abilities Middleton is very pleased with the selection. These are great people - of high character, said Middleton. Treka MeMillian, a graduate of the University of South Carolina and former teammate of Middleton at the University of South Carolina, earned a dual degree in Athletic Training and Physical. Education, along with a masters degree in Sport Administration from Minneapolis Community and Technical College in Minnesota. She spent one season as head coach at Guilford Technical Community College in Jamestown, NC, where she led the Lady Titans to a 22-8 season and won the NJCAA Region X Tournament in the teams inaugural basketball season. She will assist the Lady Catamount post players developments, handle scheduling and equipment, scout prospects, and serve as the community service liaison. MeMillian has 16 years of coaching experience at different levels of basketball including the WNBAs Minnesota Lynx, where she spent three years and her final year as an assistant coach for the team. She has also coached high school in both South Carolina and Georgia and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) teams in Georgia. Streed enters her first season as an assistant coach for the Lady Catamounts after spending one season at Miami of Ohio where she also assisted the teams forwards and assisted with recruiting and coordinated team travel. Streed will assist the Lady Catamounts as their recruiting coordinator, will work with guard development, serve as academic and compliance liaison, and assist in scouting reports. She also has valuable experience with film breakdown, as she worked as an intern for the Stanford Cardinals, where she also organized film exchange and assisted with numerous clinics and camps. Streed graduated magna cum laude from St. Cloud State in 2003, where she also played from 2000- 2003, and played in every game. Beck comes to Western Carolina with one conference ring as a player and one as a coach, after Photo by Mark Haskett winning the conference title at Miami University as a player, and then as an assistant , in 2009, at the University of Evansville. Beck will work with the point guards, handle team travel, conduct scouting, and oversee summer camps for the Lady Catamounts. She earned her bachelors degree in health education in 2005 from Miami University, with a minor in coaching. She also earned a masters degree in educational leadership from the University of . Arizona in 2008. While in college, she also served as an assistant coach for the Cincinnati Royals AAU team in 2004, and assisted the coaches of the Indiana All-Stars in 2003. Coach Middleton is looking forward to futuresummercampsafter the cancellation of this years camp. Our coaches have experience at the highest levels, said Middleton about the new staff, their ability to communicate and openness to players will help our team reach our goals. By Justin Caudell Editor-in-Chief Western Carolina womens golf coach Steve Lott announced on July 13 the signing of Malin Jansson for the 2009-10 season. Jansson inked a National Letter of Intent:to attend WCU and play golf for the Catamounts. Hailing from Nykvarn, Sweden, just outside the capital city of Stockholm, Jansson will be the fourth Swedish player currently on the Catamounts roster, and sixth different Swede to play for Western Carolina since 2001. She joins current countrymen Desiree (Ljunghusen), Elin Mickelsson (Gavie) and Josefine Sundh (Kumla), with former Swedish-born golfers Johanna Lundberg (2001-03) and Malin Fryk (2005-07) previously playing at WCU. Tam very excited that Malin Jansson has chosen Western Carolina University as the place where she would like to play her collegiate golf, said Lott, who is entering his 12th season as the womens golf coach. Malin is a very talented young lady who has the drive and work ethic to accomplish great things as a Catamount golfer. This summer has been a coming out party for her and we are very lucky to have Malin in our arsenal of weapons. This season, Jansson has made the cut in all five tournaments in which she has played, finishing in the top 10 four times including a pair of fourth-place showings. The Nykvarn, Sweden, native averaged a 76.50 on the year with a low round of two-under, 70. During her junior year, Jansson posted a 77.53 stroke average and recorded two tournament individual medalist honors. Overall, Jansson ranks eighth in Sweden among junior girls 21-years of age and younger, with a national rank of 53 among both amateur and professional golfers. Golf is my passion and I love to wake up every day and think about getting a bit better, said Jansson in an E-mail correspondence this week. I am really looking forward to being a part of the Catamount womens golf team and I cant wait for our first tournament! WCU is scheduled to open the fall portion of its 2009-10 season at the Draper Valley Intercollegiate on Sept. 6-8. The Catamounts finished second at the same tournament a year ago behind the first collegiate individual title of Blaire Minter. WCU has posted top three finishes in each of its last three appearances over the past four years, including winning the event in the 2005 season behind Fryk who won both the 05 and 06 individual title. We are scheduled to open practice on Monday, Aug. 24, and I am very excited to see the team tee it up. We return all of last years squad and we have some added fire power with Malin (Jansson), concluded Lott.
