  • ILEINTAN Catamounts slug out a series win over Samford Catamounts host Track and Field Invitational; Have Impressive Showing By Cory Spaugh Sports Writer Making their first trip to Cullowhee as a member of the Southern Conference, Samford came into town looking to extend the Catamounts struggles, but were unable to. Going into the series, Western had lost three of their last four games, including two against Clemson, but worked out their kings to tame the Bulldogs twice out of a three game set. Western Carolina was strong offensively in the first game of the series on Friday, April 17, putting up seven runs on the scoreboard, but the Bulldogs managed to top the Catamounts by pushing a run across in the top of the tenth inning and holding WCU scoreless in the bottom of the frame. The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the ninth when Mason Meredeth doubled off the left field wall and drove home the Bulldogs seventh run. In the tenth inning, Joe Durham entered the game as a pinch hitter and took the pitch up the middle for a go-ahead single, The. game ended when the Catamounts grounded into a game ending double play. On Saturday. Apr. 18, Samford and Western Carolina were forced to add an additional game on because of predicted rainfall for Sunday. In game one of the double header, the Catamounts were out to avenge their loss on Friday and they did just that by slugging five homeruns in a 26-5 rout of the Bulldogs. The Catamounts wasted little time in taking the lead trom over the Bulldogs; Matt Johns hit a grand slam, driving in four of the Catamounts five first inning runs. The five runs in the first inning was not the Catamounts best inning in victory, however, as in the third inning Western plated seven runs and broke open the game. The offensive output was a true team effort with 16 Catamounts getting at bats in the game. In the nightcap of the double header, Westerns power surge continued to allow the Catamounts to win the series. Unlike the first game, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead but the Catamounts refused to let that be the case for long as in the second inning they captured the lead by putting up four runs on the board. Just like the first game, Western Carolina used a seven run fifth inning to push the game out of reach. The big blast of the mning came off the bat of J.C. Lyons who blasted a two run home run deep over the purple monster in lefi field. Ross HeMley drove in Nick Liles with a triple-the first of his career; Liles added to the scoring later inthe inning when he drove in two runs with a double. In both games, Brent Greer was on fire and proved to be almost a one man wrecking crew, getting . eight hits in eleven at bats. Greer had two doubles and a home run on the day and tied Nick Liles for the most RBIs on the day with six runs batted in. By Cory Spaugh Sports Writer Friday, Apr. 17, the Catamounts hosted their annual WCU Track and Field Invitational where they had track and field athletes from all over North and South Carolina come to Cullowhee, The Catamounts had a strong showing on the day, especially inthe field events, having three individual first place finishes and three second place podium honors. Western Carolina swept all three podium spots in the mens javelin throw, with Matt Evans winning the event with a toss of 61.6 meters and was followed closely by Darron Dotson and Wayne Parker who had throws of 56.52 and 48.90 meters, respectively. Mike Osteen won the pole vault event and Rylan Pless won the shot out. Catamounts also finished third in the pole vault, and second. in the hammer throw and shot put. The Catamount runners were not completely outshined, as Junior Stephen Hammond won. his first event of the season in one of the most grueling running events, the 1500 meter run. The Javelin Throw event was also not the only sweep Western had on the afternoon as they also swept the mens 110 meter hurdles with Jordan Blazer Todays Crossword Solution : A | MIA The possibilities are endless. taking home top honors with a time of 15.12 seconds. The battle for second and third was intense as teammates David Gift and Sean Readon posted the same time, down to the hundredth of a second. Both men posted 16.17 second times with Gift having the slightest of advantages. iy Manteo Mitchell had a landmark event, individually qualifying for the NCAA regional by running a 10.50 second 100. meter dash. Mitchells time was .05 seconds ahead of the requirement; but the time was only good enough for a third place finish. The Catamount 4x100 relay team grabbed another first place finish in the invitational, The Lady Catamounts also were impressive, grabbing __ several podium finishes. They. swept the javelin throw event and, like the men, swept a field event. The Lady Catamounts placed first second and third in the hammer throw competition. They continued their impressive showing by sweeping the 200 meter dash. Felicia Paulding, like Manteo Mitchell, qualified for the NCAA regional by running a 23.88 second first place finish.
