Softball Falls 1-2 in Weekend Series vs. Samford Freshman Chelsea Schaffer Breaks School Record By Jada Bratton Sports Writer WCUs softball team recorded one victory against Samford during their three-game series in Cullowhee on April 18 and 19. The Catamounts fell to 11-27 and 7-11 in the Southern Conference while the Bulldogs improved to 15-24 and 8-13 in the SoCon. The Lady Catamount split its doubleheader with Samford on Saturday April 18, winning the first game 6-3 and dropping the second game 8-4. The Catamounts hit five homeruns in the 6-3 victory over Samford. Chelsea Schaffer and Mollie Fowler each had two homeruns in the game and Amber Hawkins hit one. The Bulldogs took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI single by Amanda Jordan. Western Carolina answered in the top of the third, first, with a lead-off homerun by Schaffer, and with two outs, Fowler followed with the first of her two homeruns over the centerfield wall. ie The Catamounts played strong defense to fend off the Bulldogs in the bottom of the sixth. With-one out and Gonzalez on third, Western _ Carolina turned a double play to end Samfords scoring threat. The game was iced for Western Carolina when the club posted three runs in the top of the seventh ining. Schaffer hit her second lead-off homerun of the game to break the three all tie. Kristen Gay followed with a single over the Samford third basemans head. Hawkins launched the clubs fifth homerun of the game over the left centerfield wall for the two RBI homerun. Catamount lefty hurler Katie King tossed the complete game and picked up the win. Schaffer hit safely in both games, extending her hitting streak to 14 straight. The hitting streak tied the Catamount softball school record, but that did not last long. Schaffers lone hit in the game broke the school record for consecutive hits. She has currently hit safely in her last 15 games, breaking the record of 14 set by teammate Lauren Ross. After the series, Schaffer commented on. her remarkable weekend. Breaking this record is a really great accomplishment. I was not expecting myself to break a record as a freshman. I hope we gain more support for our upcoming SoCon tournament May 6 9; we plan to take it all the way. The Bulldogs opened their first frame of the second game, posting four runs. After a scoreless second inning, Western Carolina scored four runs of its own in the top of the third inning. Schaffer led off the inning by reaching first off a Samford miscue and Gay got a single to put runners at first and second. With two outs, Fowler and Beatty had back-to-back RBI singles to pull the Catamounts within two runs, 4-2. Beth Hauser tied the game off a two RBI single to right field. Samford took the lead back with a run in the bottom of the third and scored a run in the fourth, and a run in the fifth. Chere Monday came in relief of King in the bottom of the fifth, but after allowing one run on one hit and walking two, King came back in to get the last two outs and thwart the Bulldogs scoring more runs with bases loaded. Gay and Hauser were the only Catamounts with multiple hits, as Gay was 3-for-4 and Hauser was 2-for-4. iets Sie Brown Earns State Athletic Trainers Scholarship By Suzanne Barkley WC Contributor Western Carolina University student Daniel Davis Brown II of Durham recently received one of three North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association Presidential Scholarships for Leadership.rown graduated from Northern High School in 2006 and his parents are Ken and Rhonda Brown. He expects to graduate in May 2010 with a bachelors degree in athletic training. Brown also was recently awarded a summer internship with the NFLs Baltimore Ravens By Jada Bratton Sports Writer phe western Carolia Catamounts golf team adVanced two positions by posting the third- lowest round of the final day of the Southern Conference Tournament on April 21 to finish sixth overall at the at Moss Creek Resort North Course in Hilton Head, SC. Josefine Sindh, who recorded her career-best finish, paced the Catamounts to finish tied for 11 overall, Freshman Blaire Minter | was named to the All-Southern Conference: and SoCon All- Freshman team. Minter is now the eighth Lady Catamount to receive all-conference accolades since 2002. She is joined by three other freshman, Line Cordes, Brandy Anderson, and Desiree Karlsson, who also earned All-SoCon during their first season at WCU. Furmans team held strong throughout the tournament to clinch the SoCon Conference Championship title by 22 strokes ge as an athletic trainer. During his time at WCU, he has completed internships with Duke University Sports Medicine and the Durham Bulls professional baseball club. Brown also is president of the WCU Athletic Trainers Association. To receive this scholarship is a tremendous accomplishment for Dan, said James. Scifers, associate professor and director of WCUs athletic training program. It recognizes his significant achievement in the areas of academic and clinical excellence, as well as leadership among his peers within the profession. Defending medalist Stefanie Kenoyer of Furman reclaimed another championship title, winning the individual competition by four strokes over Elons Danielle Mills in second. Kenoyer, a sophomore, carded a seven-over 223 while Mills was second at 227. Sundh finished her three rounds with an 82 on Tuesday to slip from fifth-place entering the round into a tie for 1 1th where she finished at 237. Both junior Desiree Karlsson and Minter each carded their toumney- low rounds of 77 on Tuesday in helping Western advance in the final team standings. Karlsson finished tied for [4th overall at 238, while Minter moved to a tie for 28th with a three-day score of 247. Freshman Rachel Nelson finished tied for 31st with a 54-hole score of 249, while classmate Ashley Shinn was 46th with a 264. WCU Men's Golf Improves to Finish Third at 2009 SoCon Championships By Jada Bratton Sports Writer Western Carolina overcame a seven-stroke deficit on Wedneday, April 21 to finish third overall, while two Catamounts finished within the top five at the 2009 Southern Conference Mens Golf Championship. Junior Tanner Briele finished tied for second place at one-under 71 on the final round for a 211. Ricky Stout recovered from six positions from behind to record a career-best, fifth place finish. Brieles 211 was the third-best 54 hole score recorded by a Catamount this season. The WCU teams 864 ranks as the fifth-best, three-round tournament this year and in school history. This score also holds a record for the best total for WCU at a conference championship. Western also tied it best-ever finish at the conference tournament with its second consecutive, third-place finish. The All-Southern Conference team announced WCU senior Andres Cuenca, with his third honor, which matches former Catamounts Matt Cook and Brett D. Miller records of three or more recognitions. Cuenca also led the Catamounts during the regular season. Cuenca (220) dropped three spots in the final standings with a one-over, 73, on Tuesday while classmate Dustin Furnari (220) advanced five spots in the final standings with an even- par 72 as the duo finished tied for 19th. Freshman Martin Summer finished tied for 32nd, shooting his tournament-best round of two-over, 74, on the final 18 holes for a three- day score of 227, Stout matched his tournament- low opening round of 69 on Tuesday with a second three-under to improve his career-best finish of sixth a year ago by one position amidst a three-way tie for fifth. He finished the three-round event at 213, three strokes off the leader.
