  • Page 7 WESTERN CAROLINIAN April 10, 2009 SPORTS Baseball Team Sweeps Wofford in Double-Header By Jada Bratton Sports Writer Rain on both Friday, Mar. 26 and Saturday Mar. 27 in the Upstate of South Carolina forced a double- header for the WCU baseball team on Sunday, Mar. 28, but the prior days of steady rain didnt seem to dampen the spirits of the Catamounts. Western Carolina swept both games of a Southern Conference match-up against the Wofford Terriers at Russell C. King Field. The Catamounts rallied from a six- run deficit en route to a 14-10 win in 10 innings in game one before. pounding out 20 hits in a 19-2 romp in the night cap. With the two victories, Western Carolina (17-6, 8-3 SoCon) extends its active winning streak over Wofford to 18-straight games dating back to the 2002 season. Also, after being outscored 10-to-4 through the first seven innings of the 19 played, the Catamounts managed to outscore Wofford, 29-to-2, over the final 12 frames. WCU, which played its first extra inning game of the season in game one, also moved into second place in the SoCon behind the College of Charleston (10-2), which took two of three from Furman at home over the weekend. In Sundays opener, Western rallied from a 10-4 deficit with a six-run top of the eighth inning to tie the game at 10 heading into the ninth. The Catamounts and reliever Daniel Ottone forced extra innings by working out of a base loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth. In the extra frame, WCU pushed across four runs including a two-run home run by junior Brent Greer to win, 14-10. In the night cap, Western scored in all but two innings, plating six runs as 11 batters went to the plate in the top of the first inning to pound Wofford, 19-2. Senior starter Mike Tavernier only allowed two runs on two base hits through six innings to. record the win, striking out eight against three walks. Kyle Stewart, a freshman reliever, worked one inning of hitless, scoreless relief with .a strikeout while also recording his first career home run in his first collegiate at bat as a part of a five-run eighth inning. Freshmen Tyler Brownlow, Garrett Baker and Andrew Blackwell combined to finish the final two innings with Blackwell posting a strikeout. Offensively for Western Carolina, Reid Rollison led the way at the plate in the twin-bill wins. after going 4-for-7 (.571) with a pair of strikeouts, two walks and two runs scored. Greer and Lyons each posted five-hit performances between the two games with the previous going 5-for-9 (.556) with a double and a home run and the latter driving in six runs with a three-run homer and a pair of RBI doubles. Womens Tennis Team Falls to UNC Greensboro By Brittany Burns, Sports Writer The Lady Catamounts tennis team traveled to The Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday, Mar. 28 to face the UNC Greensboro Spartans. UNC Greensboro defeated Western 7-0 overall, and swept the Catamount in all 6 single matches. Freshmen, Layne Arnold, was faced with SoCon Freshmen of the Photo by Danielle Lightner year candidate, Lucy Doughetry. Doughtetry shut out Arnold 6-0 and 6-0, giving Doughtetry her ninth win out of the last ten outings. Junior Amanda Massey showed exceptional athleticism when challenging UNC Greensboros Arielle VonStrolley. Although Massey fought hard, VonStrolley took the win 6-3 and 6-4. RECYCLING Have you? pte | \ Lady Catamounts Outslug ae Claim Series Victory By Cory Spaugh Sports Writer The Lady Catamount softball team traveled Charleston to take on the Cougars of the College of Charleston on Saturday, Mar. 28 and Sunday, Mar. 29 and got back to their winning ways in the Southern Conference. Coming off two mid week losses to Lipscomb and sitting at 4-4 in conference play, the Cats got off to a rocky start in the first game of the three game set, but settled down by the end of the series. Western Carolina dropped the first game in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon 4-1. The Cougars were able to hold the 7 hits in the game while the Cougars tallied 10 hits and pushed four runs across the plate. Pitcher Terri Mesko was dominant in the first game for the Cougars, getting the complete game and striking out five Catamounts. In the second game of the day, the Lady Catamounts rebounded offensively and beat the Cougars 8-4. WCU got a strong outing from senior Lauren Ross who recorded her fifth win. At the plate, Western was lead by Chelsea Schaffer who went 4-4 at the plate and drove in three runs, scored three times and for only the second time in her career hit a home run. Schaffer, total, accounted for six of the eight runs that the Catamounts scored on the day. The Lady Catamounts got on the board early in the second game using timely hitting, aggressive base running and a Cougar error to put up two runs in the first inning and kept - adding on to their lead in the second, adding two more runs. The Cougars also recorded two runs in the second inning but were never able to get any closer to Western, who added & ES By Cory Spaugh Sports Writer In only the second outdoor track and field event of the spring, the Catamounts gave an impressive showing to their competition on Friday, Mar. 27 and Saturday, Mar. 28 in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Western Carolina won three events and garnered eight other podium finishes against schools from all over North and South Carolina in the Asics Invitational and turned in one of their best performances. Western placed runners on the top step of the podium in three separate events. The first win the Catamounts earned was a first for many reasons. Benny Davis won the 400 meter dash, the first individual win for Davis as a collegiate sprinter, in 48.31 seconds. Davis was also a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that to their lead in the fourth when Schaffer hit a two run home run. The series finale was anything but a pitcher duel as the Lady Catamounts and the Cougars went toe-to-toe for seven innings until Western Carolina broke a 14-14 tie in the eighth inning. The eighth inning started with a single by Schaffer. Amber Hawkins then came to the plate and hit a hard line drive that landed in center field and allowed Schaffer to score all the way from first; however Hawkins, being a little too greedy, was thrown out at third trying to get a triple. The 15-14 lead was Westerns second of the game, the first one coming ck and Field Teams Wer Impressive in Asics lavitational won Westerns second victory in the invitational. Davis was joined on the team by Dominique Young, Manteo Mitchell, and Christian Bethune; the team finished the event in an amazing 41.04 seconds. Westerns sprinters were not the only ones who climbed to the top of the podium, as Matt Evans, a decathlete, also took home a win. In the decathlon, Evans won four of the ten events and won with more than 6400 points. In the 100 meter dash, two Catamount runners also had impressive showings as Dominique Young finished in third place with teammate Kevin Johnson right on his heels in fourth place. Other podium finishers on the mens side were Manteo Mitchell in the 200 meter dash and Drew Tucker in the 800 meter run; both athletes finished third in their respective events. The Lady Catamounts also got impressive showings with several Photo by Danielle Lightner only an inning before in the top of the seventh. The Cats could not make the lead stick as they gave up the tying run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. WCU got strong hitting performances throughout their lineup getting three hit performances from five different players. Western recorded 18 hits in the series finale, a total that was matched by the Cougars. The series win for Western was their second in conference play and they improved their SoCon record to 5-4 and 9-18 overall. grabbing spots on the podium. Westerns most impressive showing was in the 1500 meter run where two Catamounts finished in the top three. Megan Isaacs and Jordan Gaddy finished second and third respectively in the event with less than a minute separating the two Catamount runners. Not to be outdone by the mens 4x100 meter relay team, the Lady Catamounts ran a very close race and finished on the podium in second place. The ladies on the team were Felicia Paulding, Janet Carothers, Emma Bowers and Sherelle Fronberger. The Catamounts shined off the track as well, getting strong performances from their field athletes. Western got a fourth place finish from Chelsea McLean in the hammer throw. Junior Cale McDaniel finished in fourth place on the mens side of the hammer throw and in the mens long jump Alex Dollard also finished fourth. Head Volleyball Coach Manuel Concepcion Announces Josh Wielebniki as Assistant By Justin Caudell Editor-in-Chief Western Carolina Head Volleyball Coach Manuel Concepcion has announced the addition of Josh Wielebnicki as the assistant volleyball coach. Wielebnicki comes to Western Carolina from Illinois State University where he served as a student assistant. Last Spring with the Redbirds, he primarily worked with outside hitters and defensive specialists as well as helped prepare practice plans. During the Fall Season, he was the Data Volley Specialist, which allowed him to be in charge of all the game-breaking activities and scouting reports. The team advanced to the Semi-Finals of the Missouri Valley Conference. T am excited to have Josh Wielebnicki as my assistant; he is one of the brightest statistical minds around, Concepcion said. His playing experience at the NCAA level, along with his background as a Chicago native will be the great assets for the program. He brings the energy and passion for the game that I was looking for to fill the position. Josh will be working closely with the Outsides & Defensive Specialists. A 2008 graduate of Illinois State with a bachelors degree in History and minor in coaching, Wielebniki also played club volleyball for Illinois State. He served as the Vice President and co-captain for the team. Wielebnicki was also the Head Coach of the Illini Elite Volleyball club preparing elite players, 16-to- 18-years old, for the collegiate level. He helped the players develop skills from a fundamental, tactical, and technical standpoint. Prior to transferring to Illinois State, Wielebnicki spent two seasons as an outside _ hitter/ defensive specialist/libero for Lewis University. Josh Wielebnicki is the new assistant volleyball coach at Western Carolina. He comes to WCU from Illinois State University
