  • ee + 3 * & & @ * 8 Knocked Up Wins Our Outhouse Award for a Reason Ryan Sarda WCnewsmagazine It's funny, its gross, and its disrespectful: thats why Knocked Up is one of the best movies of 2007. How could anyone not like this film? To fully appreciate the humor of Knocked Up, you have to know a lot about the cast and the director. The majority of the cast has appeared in other projects together and they were just as funny in those as they were.in Knocked Up. Seth Rogen, the lead actor in Knocked Up, has starred in other projects that have been produced, written, or directed by Judd Apatow. After many years of delivering solid humor on the small screen, Rogen has finally gotten his big break as Ben Stone in Knocked Up. This guy has done the best acting job of 2007, and what's funny is that he is basically playing himself. The Rogen-Apatow connection began in 1999 with the small screen cult-classic Freaks and Geeks. As funny and true-to-life as this show was, network producers did not really appreciate its greatness and canceled it after the first season. Freaks and Geeks is about two different groups: the freaks and the geeks trying to make it through high school in the 80s. Rogen starred in Freaks and Geeks with fellow Knocked Up co- stars Martin Starr, and Jason Segel (How | Met Your Mother). Another F&G star, James Franco (Spider Man 1,2, and 3), made a very funny cameo in Knocked Up. q Following the cancellation of Freaks and Geeks, Apatow was back at it again with the 2001 small-screen classic Undeclared. This show had many of the same elements that Freaks and Geeks possessed and like F&G, this show was cancelled after the first season. Undeclared wass about a dorky college freshman who is about to embark on one of the best experiences of his life: college. Like Knocked Up, itis funny, disgusting, and downright disrespectful, but thats why it is hilarious. Along with Rogen, this show also has some co-stars who appeared in Knocked Up: Jason Segel, and Jay Baruchel (Almost Famous). After the networks canceled one of Apatows programs again, the director turned towards the big screen with Steve Carell starring in the 2005 film The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Like the other two shows, Rogen makes an appearance in the film as well as Knocked Up co-star Paul Rudd. Guess who else makes a cameo in Knocked Up? Good old Steve Carell. Like in Knocked Up, Rudd and Rogen steal the show, as the scenes those two share are some of the funniest in both films. When Judd Apatow directs a movie, he likes his actors and actresses to be free on the set. They have a script, but it does not have to be followed. Everyone is free to ad-lib and Knocked Up or knocked out? By Amanda Talbot * Wenewsmagazine Knocked Up? Or should it be knocked out of the running for one of the best movies of 2007? Where should | start? The movie was vulgar, graphic, and offensive. There were only a few scenes that were entertaining. Pretty much the entire movie left me wondering when it was going to be over. Aside from a few good jokes, the movie was saturated with perverted humor along with some nude scenes and even a graphic shot of a baby crowning from a specific female part. Seth Roger played an uneducated, unsuccessful, middle-aged man (Ben Stone) in the movie. After a drunken one night stand with a girl from the club, Alison Scott (Katherine Heigl), he soon found out that he was going to be a father. The entire movie revolved around the odd couple trying to form a relationship before the arrival of their baby. You would think that the movie would have to be loaded with comical scenes as you watched two complete strangers try to get to know each other in such a short time. Well, think again! The movie was stricken with bad jokes, an almost funny fight scene, and a plot that barely kept my interest. One detail that continually seemed to linger was an offensive website that Ben and his friends were forming that only & Carolinian included a list of specific time an actress's boobs were exposed in a film. For some reason, that should have been funny? Okay, so, that was supposed to be humor? | don't see it! According to the dictionary, humor is defined as an instance of being or attempting to be comical or amusing. If thats the case, then | guess it was humorous because the movie was attempting to be comical. But as for me, the attempt failed. Mission Impossible! | was neither amused nor entertained. The humor was crude, provocative, and obtrusive. What happened to the good old days when you could watch a good ole movie that had a great plot, actually funny humor, and an inspiring story? Lets just take a look at a few good movies that came out this year that should have made the list for best movie! Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End- Profit: $960,999, 404 Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix- Profit: $937 929 353 Spider Man 3- Profit: $890,871,626 Shrek the Third- Profit: 793,839,092 Transformers- Profit: $702,729, 768 Ratatouille- Profit: $580,775,884 The Simpsons Movie- Profit: $524, 505,937 ee 88, (March '07)- Profit: do everything on their own, and nearly 90% o Apatows films are unscripted lines. That brings a better glimpse of humor to the film as it shows just how naturally funny and talented each acto truly is. : Apatow is also behind the creation of tw of Hollywood's biggest characters ever. He wa: an Executive Producer for the film Anchorma which brought Ron Burgundy to life. Seth Roge makes a small appearance in this film, and Pa Rudd also has a very funny role in the fil Apatow was also the Executive Producer for th film Talladega Nights, which saw the rise of Ric Bobby. So, now that youve got a little mor knowledge of the Rogen-Apatow connection, g check out: Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, and the 40-Year-Old Virgin, and then pop Knocked Up in the DVD player and you will appreciate ji that much more. Judd Apatows comic genius and the entire cast of Knocked Up make the entire film memorable. The wit between everyone Is evenly-balanced, and even the more seriou: and sentimental scenes share a little bit of humo bringing a sense of realism to the film. Now do you see why this film won ou Outhouse Award? commentary $456,068, 181 The Bourne Ultimatum- $416, 867,071 Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard Profit: $377,503, 307 These movies are the top 10 movies of 2007 based on their box office profits. The lowest profiting movie of the bunch was Die Hard 4: Live Free or Die Hard, which brought i $37 7,503,307; whereas Knocked Up brought i a much smaller profit of $216,490 195. Don't the numbers speak for themselves? If Knocked Un was such a great movie, wouldn't it have brough in much more profit? If it was the best movie o the year, wouldn't it have been at least in the Tox 10 list? You decide. If Knocked Up was the best movie o the year, what does that say about our culture Throughout time, art, including paintings, potte and theatre (yes, that means movies), has bee a product of its time periods culture and wa of life. So in that case, if Knocked Up reflects our culture, then what does that say abou Americans? What does the movie say abou our morals, virtues, and ethics? It doesnt sa much. Profit When people think of America, do yo want them to associate our culture with this movie? | dont think so! All together the movie was tacky, tasteless, and cheap!
