  • ICTURE PERFECT? 10, its your body, appreciate it By Whitney Woody * WCnewsmagazine It's that time of year again. The Womens Center is hosting Love Your Body Day. This is an event that everyone should take part in. We've all heard the phrase, looks arent everything. Well, it's true and this time of year is the most important time to remember it. Love Your Body Day actually takes place on more than one day. The events begin on Nov. 5" and last until the 7*. On Monday, Nov. 5" through Tuesday, Nov. 6", there will be a fair in honor of the event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the UC. The fair will be filled with nutritional information, arts and crafts, games, tie-dye t- shirts, the WCU Fitness Center booth, photo booth, prizes and more! Yoga begins at 6 p.m. in the Catamount Room with more events sponsored by other organizations immediately after. The last day to join in on the fun is Wednesday, Nov. 7", with the Third Annual Fashion Show in the UC Theater. Modeling, singing, dancing and spoken word are all part of the show, so go out and have fun. Love Your Body Day is an important day to many students on campus because it teaches them to love who they are. No two people should look or act alike. Be proud to be different and be proud of who you are. Nancy Madenyika, a student at WCU who is helping to organize the event, claims that this day is the one day to empower people. It is Nancys hope Let the numbers spell it out By Katie Rath +* Wenewsmagazine sometimes numbers are the only things that make sense. Here are a few sobering body image and health statistics that (hopefully) will make your head spin. * 62% of women over the age of 20 are overweight. 70% of men over the age of 20 are overweight. The average body stats for men 20 and older are a height of 59, weight of 190 los., and a waist size of 39.0 inches. The average body stats for women 20 and older are a height of 54, weight of 163 ibs., and a waist size of 36.5 inches. * The average dress size for a woman is 14-16. The average size of a female store mannequin is a size 6 * if Barbie were a real woman, she would be a size 4, and her breasts would be 3 inches larger than her hips, causing her to have severe back problems. Some health professionals believe that, based on the size of her feet in relationship to her height (60 in real life), she would not even be able to stand up straight. - If Gl Joe Extreme were life size, he would have a 55-inch chest and a 27- inch bicep. Mark McGuires biceps are about 20. * 78% of 18-year-old women are unhappy with their bodies. * Between 0.3-1.0% ofyoung women have esternCaroltinian anorexia nervosa, which makes anorexia as common as autism. 10% of people with anorexia nervosa are male. Around {- 3% of young women have bulimia nervosa. * Around 3% of the U.S. population has binge-eating disorder. - Between 4- 20% of young women practice unhealthy patterns of dieting, purging, and binge-eating. * 45% of boys and girls in grades 3-6 want to be thinner. Over one-third of those have already dieted. * Teenage girls gain an average of 40 Ibs. between the ages of 8 and 14. Americans spend $33 billion annually that this event will make a lasting impression so people who take part can not only love their bodies on these few days, but love their bodies every day. Because of the different issues with peer pressure from friends, family and the media, it is important to be original and be yourself. For further information on Love Your Body Day or on the Womens Center, visit their website at: http:/Avwww.wcu.edu/womenscenter/. if students would like to get involved with this event or any upcoming events with the Womens Center, contact Nancy Madenyika at: ncmadenyikai@catamount.wcu.edu for more information. on weight loss products and services. The recommended amount of time you should exercise to keep your body healthy is 30 minutes a day, 4 days a week. * 30% of American adults engage in regular leisure-time activity, compared to 39% of adults who engage in no leisure-time activity.
