  • Tough 2-0 loss for WCU soccer against College of Charleston By Joel Gerber * WCnewsmagazine The Catamounts fought hard against College of Charleston but succumbed to two late second half goals. The first half was a battle of two titan defenses. It was Ali vs. Frazier, the Allies vs. the Axis powers, Vlad the Impaler vs. Diesector (if anyone remembers BattleBots). Needless to say, neither team could mount much of an offense in the first half because of disruptive defensive pressure from both sides. Western could only mount three shots in the half to College of Charlestons one. Thedefensivewhirlwindwastroublesome for the Catamounts who were forced to change their game plan and move outside what they do best. Were not a kick and run team, but thats what we had to do tonight, said Coach Tammy WCU soccer wins in resounding fashion, By Joel Gerber * WCnewsmagazine The Western Carolina womens soccer team cruised to victory over the Chattanooga Mocs on scoring from six different Catamounts. The shot total at the end of the game was 36-8 in favor of the Catamounts. Sometimes we have an obligation as fans not to cheer too loudly when an opposing team is truly getting obliterated. Take soccer for example: it's polite to cheer for only the first five of your teams six goals. After all, screaming and jumping up and down like a troupe of howler monkeys after the sixth goal would just be uncalled for. Im not saying that WCU soccer is the bully of the Southern Conference; but if we were in the schoolyard, Chattanooga would have been left hanging by their underwear and gotten their lunch money taken. Senior Heather Dittmer took full advantage of a rebound opportunity just four minutes into the game. This was her second goal of the season, moving her to fourth all-time in WCU career goals scored with 15. Once the dam broke, the flood of goals just kept coming for the Catamounts. Two minutes after Dittmers goal, Lauren Atkinson outraced the Chattanooga defense for a score. DeCesare. Our strength is not kicking the ball 50 yards and running onto it. We possess, we move forward, we go with numbers. We didnt play to our strengths; we played to our weaknesses. The struggle continued into the second half; however, College of Charleston was able to take advantage of their opportunities and scored two goals. lf the WCU soccer team was Caesar, College of Charleston forward Christy Barrow was its Brutus. Barrow scored both second-half goals, the first goal off a rebound goal in the 54*" minute. Barrows second goal came with 18 minutes left in the game when she worked her way around two Catamount defenders to score from the five- yard box. Just like Irishmen at last call, the Catamounts didnt go away without a fight. The This was Atkinsons second goal of the season, moving her into the team lead for points with eight, and sixth on all-time WCU career goals with 14. Set up by a fancy exchange of passing by Shannon Fowkes, Nikki Lombardo finished with a chip over the shoulder of the Chattanooga. Just before halftime, freshman Liz Eichler found her way to a rebound and went far post to give the Catamounts their largest halftime lead at 4-0. WCU continued the ferocity in the second half when Rachael Schomper added an empty net goal off of a pass from Buki Baruwa. The final goal came in the 64 minute when Sophomore Jenny Matteson scored her first goal of the season. The goal was set up by defender Melissa Berry streaking up the sideline past nearly the entire Chattanooga team. The six-goal performance was_ the second highest in team history, behind only the eight-goal outing in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament in 2004. Coach Tammy DeCesare thought the multitude of scoring would be great in building confidence for her players. With so many sh ill: a a A ll ele li. ly. ln. lied ii till Alii lls: ps sl lls i ti i ll lle ile i Cats had a number of close chances as they were aggressive toward the Charleston net in the second half. Erin Hamilton had a near goal denied in the 22% minute of play. Late in the second half, Lauren Atkinson took a shot that glanced off the post before trailing out of bounds. The stat sheet at the end of the game indicated how close the match actually was. Both teams were credited with eight shots on goal. Western Carolina had one corner kick to College of Charleston's two. This loss dropped WCU to 7-7 on the season, 2-3 in conference play. Charleston climbed to 7-5-1 overall and remained unbeaten in SoCon at 4-0-1. 6-1 over Chattanooga different people scoring, it was nice to see it Spread around so much, she said. We were able to get a lot of confidence in people. They were able to say to themselves, Il am capable of scoring, Im capable of putting the ball into the net, and the more were able to do that, the better we'll be in the long run. The win put the Catamounts back over .000 at 8-7 overall and at 3-3 in conference. This gives Western the opportunity to have a top four finish in the Southern Conference, leading to a home game in the opening round of the tournament. We said after the College of Charleston game that we needed to win each of our last five games to have a chance at a home game in the tournament, Coach DeCesare said. If were able to win those five, we know theres a very good chance at getting that first round game at our place. We also know if we let one game slip by, our chances become incredibly slim. The remaining schedule includes senior day at home verses Davidson, and three road games against Georgia Southern, Elon, and Wofford. newsmagazine | S.LUOdS [TiOdAA
