  • wevuU SPORTS 5) Strong weekend for Catamount soccer with two home wins over SoCon rivals By Joel Gerber * WCnewsmagazine WCU soccer defeated Appalachian State 3-0 on Friday and carried momentum into Sundays 2-1 victory over The Citadel. The first game was a nearly dominant performance by the Catamounts. It was clear that the Cat's game plan right from the start was to test Apps freshman goalie. The Cats, scoring in the 9" minute, didnt take long to prove their point. Freshman midfielder Erin Hamilton gathered a cross from Lauren Atkinson and rifled a shot to the upper left corner of the net. This was Hamiltons first goal of the season and the fourth assist for Atkinson, which puts her in the team lead for assists. The Cats kept up the pressure and scored again five minutes later. Shannon Fowkes was able to gather her own rebound and practically dribbled past the keeper. The Catamounts dominated possession and spent nearly the entire first half on offense. Coach Tammy Decesare attributed the style of play to the Catamounts being able to impose their will on App State. We knew that Appalachian was going to bring a different style of play than us tonight, said Coach DeCesare. I told the girls that the game was going to come down to who could make their Style of play work, and who would play their style the best. We are an attacking type of team, and we needed to make the pace fit that style. Frankly, the girls showed up united, as a team, and gave a total team effort. The Catamounts maintained their offensive prowess and continued to play an aggressive, offense-driven type of soccer in the second half. Nikki Collins scored bottom left off a picture-perfect passing exchange with Erin Hamilton. This was Collins first goal of the season and Hamiltons first assist to add to her goal earlier in the night. 30 Cent wings *new flavors* ALL THE TIME! Tuesday &Thursdays: $1 Draft 16 oz. Caitlin Williams, Catamount goalie and resident brick wall, recorded her fourth shutout of the season The second match of the weekend was Sunday, Oct. 7, at home at the Catamount Athletic Complex. As with the App State game, Western scored early. Six minutes into the game, Shannon Fowkes received a cross from Kellie Oberholtzer and scored across the goal from right at the 18-yard box. The score remained 1- 0 until The Citadels Emily Haller scored off a chip shot that snuck its way under the crossbar in the 54" minute. Rachael Shomper was the hero of the day, blasting a shot from around the 18-yard box for the game-winning goal in the 65 minute. Kellie Oberholtzer was credited with her second assist on the night. The low score makes this game seem a lot closer than it actually was. The Catamounts recorded 39 shots on goal, the second highest in team _ history behind a 49-shot performance in 1999. In comparison, The Citadel had only four shots, one in the first half. Williams had to make only one save for her fifth victory on the season. Coach DeCesare said that the Bulldogs emphasis on defense helped to determine the Strategy for the Cats. When we face a team like this, we have to be more patient, she said. Anything longer than that, and were making our job much more difficult. These two wins brought the Catamounts Overall record to 7-6, and to 2-2 in conference play.
