In game five, the Cats once again jumped out early with a 4-1 lead, but the Phoenix rose from the ashes yet again and used an 8-1 run to tie the game at five and lead at 9-5. Western battled back with a 7-1 run to lead at 12-10. The Cats only needed three points for victory, but Elon went on a 5-1 run to win. After the heartbreaking loss, the Cats would have to regroup the very next day and defend the Ramsey Center against UNC Greensboro. The Catamounts were swept in Boone before traveling back to Cullowhee and losing to Davidson in four games. The first match was Friday night against the hated Mountaineers, but the Cats couldn't compete with App as they lost 3-0 (30-19, 30-27, 30-14). Sophomores Katie Hennessey and Liz Rondone teamed up with freshman Jelena Jakovijevic to lead the way for WCU. Hennessey finished with 20 assists, while Rondone had 11 digs. Jakovijevic tallied 14 kills. Western scored the first point in game one and went ahead 3-1 early, but nothing else really went right for the Cats. App fought back and _ tied the game before going on a 10-3 run to lead by seven. The closest WCU got after that was a five point deficit. The Catamounts fought much harder in game two, but still ended up on the losing side. Early on the action was back and forth as the game was tied at six-all. The Cats jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in game one, but the Spartans used an 8-2 run to establish their dominance. UNCG would extend their lead to eight at 17-9 and up to ten at 23-13. The Cats finished the match on a 12-7 run, but it wasn't enough as they lost by five. The Cats scored the first point in game App 14-8 to tie the game at 21. Western could only tie the game from that point on as ASU kept going ahead by one or two points before winning by three. Down two games, the Catamounts just gave up in game three. App pounced on the wounded Cats from the get-go with a 3-1 lead. WCU tied it at four-all and stayed close until the game was tied at 14-all. ASU then finished off the game with a 16-0 run to win the match. Saturdays match-up with Davidson at least was much more competitive. The Cats won game one 30-28, but lost game two 30-21, three 30-25, and finally four 30-20. Once again Hennessey, Rondone, and Jakovijevic were keys for Western. Hennessey recorded a triple-double with 11 kills, 38 assists, and 12 digs. Rondone finished the night with 20 digs, while Jakovijevic had 13 kills, but also had a very freshman-like 14 errors. Western scored the first point in game one and led much of the early portion of the match. The Wildcats would pull ahead at 13-12 and use a 4-1 run to gain some breathing room. The Catamounts would use a 5-1 run to tie the game at 18, but an 8-4 run would push Davidson WV ymens Cross Country teams finish third Josh Walker rounded out the points finishers for Western. The WCU men had four other competitors in the event as Dylan Hermelee finished 22" with a time of 27:31.41, Field Miller finished 26" with a time of 27:42.72, Todd Davidson finished 30" with a time of 27:48.69, and Drew Tucker finished 42" with a time of 28:48.14. The Catamount women were led in the OK by senior Kerrie Savery. Savery continued her strong season with a 5" place finish. Savery ran an 18:47.54 and finished 33.26 seconds behind first- place finisher Emily Tangwar of USC-Upstate. two as well, but UNCG quickly took a 5-3 lead. The Spartans then went on a 12-6 run to lead by eight at 17-9. An 11-6 run would put UNCG up by 13 as the Cats would end up losing by 10. A 4-1 run by the Spartans tied the game at five, and after tying again at six, UNCG went on a 14-7 run to lead by seven at 20- 13. UNCG just steadily beat ou: the Cats from that point and won by 11. The three losses dropped Western to 7- 18 overall and to 2-8 in the SoCon. ahead at 26-22. The Catamounts would regroup from this point and close out the match on an 8-2 run to win game one. Unfortunately, that momentum would not carry over to game two as Davidson started off hot with a 5-1 lead. The Wildcats would end up leading the entire game and winning by nine. Western bounced back early in game three with a 3-1 lead, but the Wildcats responded with a 5-3 run to tie the game at six. Davidson kept running from there as they used a 9-5 run to go ahead 15-11. Western would get within one point on a couple of occasions, but never any closer as they ended up losing by five. The fourth game was almost identical at the beginning as WCU once again went ahead 3- 1, and the Wildcats yet again tied the game at 6-6. This time Davidson used a 6-3 run to establish control, but Western would use a 4-1 lead to tie the game at 13. An 8-2 run would put the game and match back into the hands of Davidson as they went ahead 21-15 and never looked back. The two losses dropped WCU to 7-20 on the year and an abysmal 2-10 in the SoCon. WCU returns to action on Wednesday night at home against Wofford.
