  • IWCU SPORTS 3. Mens Golf collapses at Furman Intercollegiate By Andy Gambill * WGnewsmagazine The Western Carolina Mens Golf team turned in their worst performance of the year on March 23-25 at the Furman Intercollegiate. After ending the first day at 19", the Cats moved up to 18" on the second day, but on the final day of the Intercollegiate, the Catamounts imploded and finished dead last in 20" place. Western would shoot a 304, 298 and finally a horrible 318 to finish with a total score of 920. WCU would finish 12 strokes behind the nearest competitors, Davidson and Appalachian State. Virginia Tech would finish first in the tournament as they shot a three-day score of 873 on the 6,825-yard course in Greenville, S.C. Southern conference opponent Elon finished second in the tourney as they were four strokes behind the Hokies. Junior Matt Cook led the Catamounts in the dismal performance. Cook exemplified the Catamounts performance as he led after the first round of the tournament with a 70. Cook then slipped each round with a 75 and finally an 81. Cooks score of 226 was tied for 59". Freshmen Ricky Stout and Patrick Lamb finished in ties for 74 and 70", respectively. Stout shot a 75 on the first day, before improving a stroke on day two. Day three was a struggle, though, as Stout fired an 80. Lamb finished only one stroke behind Stout as he opened up the first day with an 80, but Lamb would put up the best Catamount performance over the final two rounds as he shot a 73 and 77. Both scores were the Catamount lows for day two and day three. Freshman Michael Chapin tied for 101". Chapin shot a 79, 77 and finally an 82 to finish with a score of 238. Usually consistent senior Tripp Morrow played horribly as he had a terrifying 87 on the first day. Morrow did shoot better the rest of the tournament but still only carded a 76 and 80 to finish in 107". Jason Judy of Elon won the tournament with a 211. Judy shot a 71, 71 and then ended the tournament with a phenomenal 69. Judy Andres Cuenca wins Wofford Invitational By Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine After missing the Furman Invitational on March 23 due to injury, sophomore Andres Cuenca returned with a vengeance at the Wofford Invitational. Cuenca shot a_ three- round 208 to finish eight-under par and win the tournament. The win was Cuencas first of his career. Overall, Western Carolina would finish fifth in the 14-team tournament with a score of 873 to finish nine-over par. The Catamounts tied with Samford University and finished 16 strokes behind tournament winner Elon University. WCU beat out South Carolina, Winthrop, and last-place Appalachian State. The Cats finished 42 strokes ahead of the Mountaineers. Cuenca led the charge as he put up some amazing statistics. The 208 ties the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history. The eight-under par was the seventh-lowest score in Wofford Invitational history and the lowest score since 2002 when Steve Marino of Virginia shot a nine-under par. Cuenca shot a 70 on day one and improved by four strokes to 66 on day two. A final round even-par 72 would wrap up the win for the transfer from Spain. Junior Matt Cook also turned in one of his best performances of the year as he finished tied for seventh. Cook shot a three-round score of 213 to finish five strokes behind Cuenca. Cook opened the tourney with a 68 before firing a 73 and 72 on the last two rounds. The other finishers for Western were would win by three strokes. Western played the tournament without second-leading scorer sophomore Andres Cuenca. The Cats hope to have Cuenca back in action for their next tournament on April 1 and 2 at the Wofford Invitational. Ricky Stout, Tripp Morrow, and Patrick Lamb. The freshmen Stout and Lamb turned in solid performances. Stout finished tied for 48" with a 227, while Lamb tied for 63 with a 231. The senior Morrow finished tied for 58" with a 228. Also competing in the tourney as an individual was freshman Cody Walker. Walker finished 21% as he shot a 219 with three rounds of 73. Had Walker competed for WCU, then the Catamounts would have finished second in the invitational with a score of three-under par. The Catamounts next tournament will be on April 22-24 at the Country Club of South Carolina in Florence, S.C. for the Southern Conference Mens Golf Championships. Womens Golf team slips at Lady Seahawk Invitational By Andy Gambill * WCnewsmagazine The Western Carolina womens golf team struggled on the second day of the Lady Seahawk Invitational, and as a result slipped from 5" place to 8" place. The tournament, held at River Landing Golf Club in Wallace, NC during March 26 and 27, did showcase what was a strong performance by senior Bianca Melc .e. Melone shot a three-round total of 223 and finished in a tie for sixth place. Melone opened up the tourney with a 73 before firing 75 on the second and third rounds. Junior Emily Klein of UNC-Wilmington won the & Carolinian individual title as she finished 11 strokes ahead of Melone. UNCW also took home second place as Carmen Perez-Narbon finished four strokes behind Kleins 212. Junior Malin Fryk was another strong performer for the Catamounts. Fryk tied for 17" place as she shot a 75 and 74 before slipping to 80 in the third round. Freshman Desiree Karlsson tied for 38" as she shot a 235. Karlsson fired a 75 in the second round, but a third-round 82 was her undoing. Elin Mickelsson and Kandy Carland were the final two Catamount finishers. Mickelsson finished tied for 68" with a 247, while Carland finished tied for 74" with a 251. The Lady Catamounts finished with a three-round total of 934 as they shot a 307, 306, and unfortunately a third-round score of 321. Had Western fired a 308 then they could have tied for 6" place, but 8" place is still a strong finish. Western beat out the University of Kentucky and six other schools. UNC-Wilmington used home-field advantage to win the tournament. The Seahawks shot an 888 to finish 46 strokes ahead of WCU and 13 strokes ahead of second place-finisher East Tennessee State. The Lady Cats next tourney is on March 2 at the John Kirk/Lady Panter Collegiate in Atlanta.
