Catamount Tennis loses two in a row, fall to 0&5 in SoCon By Ryan Sarda WCnewsmagazine After losing their two opening conference matches to Davidson and Wofford, the Catamount womens tennis team returned to action on March 24 and 25 to battle with conference foes UNC-G and Georgia Southern. The Catamounts would lose the battles to The Spartans and the Eagles. UNC-G defeated WCU 7-0, while Georgia Southern defeated Western 6-1. The losses drop the Catamounts to 0&5 in the Southern Conference and give them a record of 4&8 overall. Arielle VonStrolly of the Spartans | defeated the top seeded Catamount junior Trisha Hanson 6-4, 6-0. At the second seed, Catamount junior Susanna Sjokvist lost in two sets 6-2, 6-0. At the third seed, Catamount freshman Amanda Massey put up a fantastic effort but fell in three sets 6-2, 6-7, and 10-6. The Catamounts were swept both in the Tired of looking for housing? They hoped to come out and rebound from their slow SoCon start by defeating the Eagles of Georgia Southern. However, the exact opposite happened as the Eagles defeated Western 6- 1 The only winin singles competition came from the top seeded Hanson who defeated her opponent Molly Maddox of Georgia Southern 6-4, 6-4. Hanson also won in the doubles competition she and Massey defeated the Eagles Maddox and Christine Caforio 8-6. Hanson was the Catamounts only winner in the singles competition. However, Massey did not disappoint anyone with the way she played against Georgia Southern. The third seeded Massey and opponent Heather Reynolds of Georgia Southern went neck and neck throughout their entire match up. Massey won the first game 7-4, but she fell in the next game 6-4. The forced tiebreaker also did not fall Masseys way as she fell 10-7. The Eagles won the doubles competition despite Hanson and Massey's victory. Reynolds and Kristi Keggereis of Georgia Southern defeated Mariona Jane and Susana Sjokvist of Western 0-0, 8-2. In the third seed match- up, Holly Stocks and Emily Turke of WCU were forced to forfeit after an illness occurred. Now 0&5 in the conference, the .. Catamounts take a break from conference play as they get prepared to take on the Lady Rams of Winston Salem State. Following their non-conference opponent, the Catamounts get prepared for another conference match against the Phoenix of Elon. Catamount Tennis shuts out Lady Rams but fall to Elon By Ryan Sarda WGnewsmagazine The Catamount Womens Tennis team hit the road on March 29 to battle non-conference opponent Winston Salem State Lady Rams. The Catamounts swept The Rams 7-0, and they earned victories in all five singles matches and all three doubles matches as well. The rout started as the Catamounts top two seeds shut out their opponents. The Catamounts top seeded player junior Trisha Hanson defeated WSSUs Terese Lavan in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Westerns second seeded player junior Susanna Sjokvist blanked her Winston Salem State opponent Amanda Walker in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. The Rams _ eventually dropped the third, fourth and fifth singles matches as the Catamounts ended a five-match losing streak and moved to 5&9 overali on the season. Following their rout of the Rams, the Catamounts looked to end another losing streak. After dropping their first five conference games, the Catamounts looked to halt their conference losing streak with their next opponent, the Elon Phoenix. However, the losing streak continued as the Cats fell to the Phoenix 5-2 and dropped to 0&6 in the SoCon. Freshmen Tessie Salame and Amanda Massey each posted victories for the Catamounts, but it would not be enough as the Phoenix won the rest of the games. The Phoenix also won two of the three matches in the doubles competition. The second seeded Salame defeated her opponent Jenn Tucci of Elon in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 10-8. The fourth seeded Massey defeated her opponent Francine Rudolph of Elon in two sets 7-5, 6-1. The top seeded Hanson fell to her opponent Deanna Bailey in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. The third seeded Sjokvist fell to her opponent 6-2, 6-1. The fourth and fifth seeded Catamounts Mariona Trilla Jane and Holly Stocks fell in straight sets to their opponents. In the doubles competition, The Phoenix took two of three against The Catamounts. Salame and Hanson fell 8-6 to the Phoenix tandem of Bailey and Tucci. Massey and Jane, however, defeated their opponents Kelley Moore and Hayley Wahl 8-6. Despite falling to 0&6 in the conference, the Catamounts have improved overall as a team.
