  • Sees es SaaS, Sy See ea aaa Incubus does it again By Lacey Martinez * WCnewsmagazine Incubus is back! After the release of A Crow Left of a many Incubus fans were left confused and unsure of what the bar future would bring. However, the recent release of Light Grenades brought hope to the hopeless. Light Grenades released at #1 on the Billboard 200, sellin 165,000 copies in America in its first week. This album is surprising the bands first number one album. However, Light Grenades no holds the record of the biggest drop from #1 in chart history, fallin from #1 to #37 in its second week on the Billboard 200 Album With that being the case, it is still worth buying for old and ne Like all things in life, Incubus has been a growing proce and is ever changing. If Fungus Amongus was the experimentatio S.C.LE.N.C.E the birth, Make Yourself the growth, Morning View th maturity, and A Crow Left of a Murder the death, than the new albu Light Grenades is the reincarnation of Incubus. Its fresh sounds can quickly remind us of the synthesiz body yet melodic crooning of past albums. Yet at the same time it h a mature feel to it, most songs being about relationships or love. One thing that will never change with the progression Incubus is that of Brandon Boyds poetic lyrics. He always brings ne light to regular emotions that most people experience. The song Paper Shoes relates to a situatio he is stuck in a relationship with someone he does not ca anymore but he is afraid of change, also. The lyrics: I'd rather be on my own / Youre about as reliable as paper shoes in bad weather / Bul pain will roll off like water on feathers show Boyds distinct ability te to turn any situation into poetry. An interesting observable fact about Light Grenades firs single, Anna Molly, is that the title is never once sung in the song y Boyd repeatedly sings anomaly, which is defined as an irregular or abnormality. This play on words brings an appreciated depth tot songs meaning. Light Grenades is a mesmerizing step into the direction t the band is evolving. It would get five stars in this review except one disappointing factor. Perhaps the most frustrating thing abc Light Grenades is that some of the songs like Pendulous Thr and Earth the Bella (Part Il) are not long enough. If the that the music was forming in these two songs were expa three of four minutes in length Incubus could have created phenomenal. Ultimately, the new album Light Grenades is a must for an Incubus fan, and certainly recommended to anyone who likes musi of this genre. Four out of Five Stars - Cullowhee Creek, Live Music By Katie Rath * WCnewsmagazine Though the listening styles of students and residents in "Western North Carolina vary greatly, no other style of music captures the heart of the traditional mountain heritage like bluegrass. And so to write about that style of music, | would turn to no other band but Cullowhee Creek. Cullowhee Creek, the local heroes of bluegrass here at WCU, do not yet have an album, so, against the normal grain of how | write . music reviews, | instead reviewed their multiple live performances. Believe me, you want to know about them, regardless of whether or not they have a CD. | first heard Cullowhee Creek at an Open Mic Night last year. When Troy Connor began to sing and pick at his banjo and then was joined by the other four band members, | was slowly drawn into deep southern comfort. With a rousing applause after they finished, | realized they had already established quite a fan base. The local adoration for Connor, Mike Yow, Jacob Trantham, Drew Edgerton and Harrison Carter has steadily increased since their Open Mic Night days. Veteran players at the Mountain Heritage Day celebrations, Cullowhee Creek also plays frequently outside of Nick and Nates restaurant in Sylva. Crowds are drawn in every single time by the sweet twang of instruments and voices. Crooners Connor and Yow do stunning vocal covers of popular bluegrass songs, like Wagon Wheel and even a few originals. The stringed instruments weave a consistently homespun melody that can make you smile with the nestalge for a mountain life you may have never even known. lf youve never had a chance to listen to these good ol boys, | encourage you to check them out. They have a Facebook group with postings of their next gigs, and visit their MySpace to hear tunes at www.myspace.com/cullowheecreek. : 3 and a half out of 5 stars MEISE LECT ws.
