  • Young Catamounts no By Andy Gambill Wenewsmagazine After losing two in a row on the road during the week of January 14-20, the Western Carolina mens basketball team was hoping to bounce back during the next week. The Young Catamounts will have to keep hoping as they were demolished by both Elon and Davidson during the week of January 21-27. The Cats started off the week at home on a Monday night game against Elon (5-13, 3-6). Elon had beaten Appalachian State and was a very solid SoCon team, so it was obvious that the game would be a tough one to win, but being blown out at home was an unexpected occurrence. The Catamounts came out with a lackadaisical attitude and it showed right from the start. Elon started off the game with a 9-0 run. The lead just expanded from that point on as Elon kept hitting shots while Western couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Elon would lead by 19 points at 28-9 with 7:58 left in the half before going into the locker room with a 14-point lead at 37-23. Elon shot well in the first half as they hit 52% from the field and 60% from long-range. Western on the other hand, shot only 25% from Nick Aldridge powers his way to basket against Elon in first half. match for Elon and Davidson the field and a miserable 1 for 9 from long-range. The young Catamounts have struggled at different points this year but the same thing has always occurred; they never give up. The Cats wouldn't giveupthistimeeithe. $= = | A 17-6 run by Western would slice the lead to 10 points at 57-47 with 7:31 left; but that was as close as WCU would get. The score hovered around the 10 point difference for a while, but the Phoenix would finally go on an 11- 1 run to go ahead by 20. The Cats ended the game on a 9-2 run to end up losing 77-64. Leading the way for Elon was LeVonn Jordan. Jordan finished the night with 21 points as he connected on all 12 of his free throw attempts. Also playing well for Elon was Chris Chalko and Brett James. Chalko, a second-team All-SoCon selection last year, finished the game with 16 points, while James scored 10 points off have been totally out of the . the bench before fouling out. Western only had two players in double figures. The Wildcats showed no mercy though, and hit eight 3-pointers in the first half including four straight at one point. The Catamounts shot back and used a 17-4 run to eclipse a 10-point Wildcat lead with 10:36 remaining. Davidson bounced right back with a 25-5 run and outscored the Cats 31-11 to end the half. Davidson shot 50% f from the field and 53% | from long-range in the half. The Catamounts shot 44% from the field, but still found themselves down 46-29 at halftime. The closest the Catamounts would get for the rest of the game was 12 points at the 7:55 mark. But the Wildcats were just too good and ended up winning by 20 points at 79-59. Davidson put three players into double figures led by Stephen Curry. Curry, : the son of former Charlotte Hornets basketball player Dell Curry, scored 25 points as he hit 8 of 11 shots overall, 5 of 8 shots from long-range, and 4 of 4 shots from the free throw line. Thomas Sander scored 18 points and had 6 rebounds for Davidson, while William Archambault scored 10 points off the bench. The only player in double figures for Western was Aldridge.
