They came into the week at 4- 1 and in first place in the Southern Conference North Division. But instead of expanding on their lead they dropped two games to fall to 4-3 and third place in the Division. The first game of the week came on Monday night against hated Appalachian State Mountaineers (13-4, 5-1). The game was a _ battle for first place as ASU was also 4-1 in the ~SoCon. Not only was it a battle for first place, but it was also a televised game as Fox Sports : South covered the game in Boone, NC. Instead of playing up for the cameras, the Cats came out flat and were demolished by the much quicker Mountaineers. The game started off close as both teams traded buckets. The Mountaineers would pull ahead 15-10 five minutes into the game, but Antonio Russell stroked a three to cut the lead to two. The Mountaineers were much more athletic though, and went on a 16-2 run with 12:23 left to take a 35-20 lead. Appalachian State was getting whatever they wanted inside and as a result shot 65 percent in the half. The Cats would go into the locker room down by 17 points at 53- 36. The Cats came out in the second half just as bad and went down even further at 22 - points. The Cats rallied from that point and cut the lead down to 15. ASU pushed the lead back to 19 points with back-to-back lay-ups. But the Catamounts would not give up. With four - minutes remaining, the Cats made a run. Brandon Giles nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 16 points. After an App free throw, the Cats cut the lead to 13 at 90-77 with four straight points from big man Nick Aldridge. nian a row on the road The Mountaineers hit two more free throws, but freshman Jake Robinson nailed a three-pointer to cut the lead to 12. 3 The Cats and Mountaineers swapped free throws, and with 2:15 left the score was 96-82 App. Russell nailed a three-pointer at this point and cut the lead to 11. The Mountaineers pushed it back to 12 with a free throw, but the Cats hit two of their own. Another App free throw pushed the lead back to 11, but Arnold Gore tipped in a shot to cut the lead to 98-89. The Mountaineers iced their two free throws though, and would win by a final of 100-91 as Aldridge hit a shot with 6 seconds left. The Mountaineers had four players in double figures led by former University of Virginia big man Donte Minter. Minter was unstoppable inside and finished with 22 points (on 10 for 12 shooting) and 6 blocks. Apps other big man Davis Bowne also finished with 20 points as he hit all nine of his shots from the field. Kellen Brand came off the bench to give App 20 points, while Demetrius Scott finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Jeremy Clayton also played well inside for App as he had 8 points and 12 rebounds. For Western it was all about freshman Nick Aldridge. Aldridge was a beast inside as he finished with 31 points and 9 rebounds. Gore also played well inside as he finished with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Russell finished with 18 points and 5 assists, but overall the Cats were overmatched athletically and size-wise inside. After that loss the Cats had four days before their next game at Furman. The game at Furman (9-9, 3-4) was a very winnable match- up for the Cats, but they came out and let one slip away as the Paladins outplayed Western. The Paladins used homecourt AN ESTERN AROLINIAN news | DREAM OF COVERING THE BIG GAME? We can help! e-mail us: wec@wcu.edu advantage to pull away from the Cats in the first half. With the score tied at 6, Furman went on a 14-0 run to lead 20-6 about midway through the first half. The Cats would respond with four straight points, but Furman responded by pushing the lead back up to 18 points. A 10-4 run was the only thing that kept Western from going into the locker room down worse than 41- 29. The Cats cut the lead to 10 points in the second half with a lay-up. Once again the Paladins went on a run to push the lead back up, this time it was a 9-3 run to go back up by 16 at 50-34. The Cats would not go away and made their biggest push of the game as they went on a 15-4 run to cut the lead to 54-49. Only down 61-57 with 6:12 left, the Cats were finally closed out as Furman outscored Western 18-10 in the final 6 minutes to win the game 79- 67. : For Furman the leaders were Robby Bostain and Jadee Jones. Bostain finished with 23 points as he shot 13 of 14 from the charity stripe. Jones finished with 15 points off the bench. Western had five players in double figures, but only shot 34% from the field for the game. Aldridge had another good game as he had 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals, but he also shot only 4 of 13 overall and had 6 turnovers. Jake Robinson finished with 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Brandon Giles finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Gore had 10 points, while Russell finished with 10 points and 6 rebounds, but shot 1 for 7 from the field. With the loss, the Cats fell to 7-11 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon. magazine
