  • WCU: More than Just Parties By Ryan Sarda * WCnewsmagazine Believe it or not, Western actually offers more than just parties and Greek Life. The campus of Western Carolina University is growing more rapidly as each day passes, and WCU is becoming a critically-acclaimed institution. For all you high school seniors out there who are stressing about making the choice between Appalachian and WCU, there are plenty of reasons why you should Western instead of any other school in the mountains. The campus is becoming more and more diverse and is clearly expanding every day. More things are being added, more money is being spent, and more buildings are being built to make sure students are enjoying their stay at the university. The campus is in the midst of building a new state of the art student recreation center for students to get their daily dose of exercise and fitness. All the construction around Reid Gym that is currently going on is for the new and improved Student Recreation Center. In a statement released on www.wcu.edu about the new student recreation center, Julie Smith listed the variety of different things that the new facility will offer to students. Our new student recreation center will provide an avenue for encompassing an array of recreational opportunities from strength training and cardiovascular equipment, to group exercise classes, basketball, volleyball, sport clubs and intramurals activities, stated Smith. The dorms formerly known as Helder and Leatherwood will no longer be in existence, and neither will the delicious campus cafeteria Dodson. Instead, WCU is bringing in a new dining facility to replace the two dorms and Dodson. This will give students an opportunity to get a better choice of food and a better variety of eateries as well. Who knows, it might actually be good. Im going to miss Helder and Leatherwood, but | am going to be excited to see what Western does with Dodson. | am curious to know what kind of food places Western is going to bring in for us to enjoy, said junior Daniel Nickel. From Greek life to Last Minute Productions, from Student Government to intramurals, there are plenty of student life activities as well as academic programs for students to get involved and take advantage of while they are at WCU. If student life and involvement is not what is influencing your decision to come to Western, then Western is still a great school to attend because of the variety of academics that they offer. Western offers over 120 different majors on their 600 acre campus to appease the 8,000 students that they have. To help expand students horizons and to help get students on the right career path, WCU has some top notch programs all available for the students to broaden interests. Way back when, WCU started off a teacher's college. Today, teaching is still a big thing in Cullowhee. Western offers graduate and undergraduate programs to help students become certified teachers. The program ranges from elementary education to secondary education. The teacher education programs at WCU have been critically acclaimed and nationally recognized for its excellence. If busting bad guys is your thing, then criminal justice is what youre looking for. The WCU criminal justice program is so acclaimed that it was used as the foundation for the other criminal justice programs in the UNC-system. If looking good like Ron Burgundy is for you, then Western has a phenomenal Communication department. The WCU Broadcasting program is the only one in the entire UNC-system that requires a professional internship for students. This internship helps give students a first hand experience at what the real world is like. It also helps give students professional experience in the field. While Appalachian State might be better than Western in football, UNC-Cullowhee still has some of the best degree programs in the state, and even the nation. App happens to be number 1 in the nation in football, but WCU is number 1 in the nation with its Entrepreneurship, Project Management, and teacher education programs. It is also the only school in the entire nation that has an extensive four year emergency medical care program. So, take that App! With Western also doubling the size of its campus and with the town of Sylva expanding as well, choosing Western as your school compared to Appalachian State and UNC-Asheville will not be such a bad idea. newsmagazine = NOISO'Idsza NUALSamM
