  • WCnewsmagazine 31 Womens tennis team open new facilities with victory over UNCA By Andy Gambill Wenewsmagazine The Western Carolina women's tennis team had their brightest moment of the season so far as they defeated the UNC-Asheville women 5-2 to open the new Catamount Athletic Complex on a winning note. Western won four matches on March 2 in singles and one in doubles to defeat rival UNCA. Trish Hanson and Mariona Trilla Jane got the Cats off to a quick start as they teamed up to defeat Rachel Rhoney and Mary Katherine Fitzgerald, 8-6, in doubles. Susanna Sjokvist and Holly Stocks came up short in the second doubles maich as they lost 8-6 to Lindsay Boykin and Whitney Abbott of UNCA. With the score tied at 1-1, Western's ace Hanson stepped up in singles and dominated her competition, Rhoney, in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to give the Cats a 2- 4 lead. Abbott and UNCA struck back in the next match by beating Stocks in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, to te the score at 2-2. UNCA never got any closer as Western swept the final three matches. Trilla Jane had the toughest time of the final three matches as she beat Boykin in three sets, 4-6, 6-2, and 6-2. Sjokvist dispatched Fitzgerald in straight sets, winning 7-6 and 6-2, while freshman walk-on Cariey Abbott shutout Isabel Carson, 6-0, 6-0, for her first career victory. Inwhat has been a tough season for the 3-10 Catamounts, this win will surely be the brightest spot of the season, barring any upset in the Soon Championships. Often playing the year with only four players, the Cats had to forfeit many points to opponents and have had a hard time competing shorthanded. That wasn't the case this time as they dominated mountain rival UNCA to win in the first match ever held at the new Catamount Athletic Complex. This is a bright spot and accomplishment that will forever be 5 | remembered in the school tennis annuals. So Photo Credit: Mark Haskett while this may have been a trying season for the program, history was made and a positive moment accomplished.
