Catamount Softball wins 4 SoCon series By Zachary Colbum * Wenewsmagazine A few records were broken April 15-16 as the Lady Catamount softball team won their 30 win of the inaugural season and set a conference record for homeruns hit in a single season (67) as they took two out of three wins from the Lady Mocs of Chattanooga at Frost Stadium. The wins sent Western to 30-16 on the season, and 9-2 in the Southern Conference. The Lady Mocs fell to 27- 29 on the year and 5-7 in the Souther Conference. In the first game, Westem scored the top of the 1* inning after loading up the bases on a hit batsman and two walks. Freshman Jenny Jackson hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, scoring teammate Allyson McCubbins for a 1-0 lead. In the fifth inning, the Lady Catamounts broke the league homerun record on back-to-back homers. Freshman Heather Pritchard hit the first one, with freshman Samm Keppel on base. Then the next batter, Savannah Filley, followed up with a homer of her own to make it a 4-0 lead. The Lady Cats then added another run in the top of the seventh inning as Keppel pounded a one-out double to leftfield, and reached third on an error. Two batters later, Pritchard singled to short, scoring Keppel to give Western the 5-0 victory. For the game, Pritchard went two for three with three RBIs and a run Keppel went two for three with two runs scored, and Filley was one for three with an RBI and a run. Jackson had the last RBI despite going hitless. Mendy McKenzie picked up her 16" win of the year, allowing just four hits while striking out six and giving up three walks in a complete-game effort. In Saturday's double-header, Western took the first game, but dropped the second one. The win in the first game assured Western of their fourth consecutive conference series. Despite the loss, Western maintained sole Possession of first place in the Southern Conference. The Lady Mocs it the scoreboard with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Western responded back with a run of their own; Allyson McCubbins drew a one-out walk and advanced to third base on Sophomore Savannah Filley's single to centerfield. WCU RBI leader, junior Ashley Adams, drove in McCubbins with a single down the leftfield line to cut the deficit to 2-1 Chattanooga answered back by adding another run in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 3-1 Western then rallied and took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning as Freshman Stephanie Beatty and junior Nikki Bost drew back-to-back WChnewsmagazine 20 walks with one out in the inning, followed by a single to center by McCubbins to load the bases two batters later. Heather Pritchard cleared the bases with a -run double to right-center to take a 4-3 lead. One inning later, Adams led off the inning with a home-run to left field to provide the final score for the contest, 5-3. The homer was the 18" of the season, setting a SoCon record for homers in a single-season. The 18 homers rank her in the top four in the NCAA. Pitching for the second consecutive day, freshman Mendy McKenzie struck out seven of the 30 batters she faced, walked two and gave up three eared runs to get her SoCon-leading 17" win of the season. In game two on Saturday, Western scored first on a lead-off home run by freshman Jenny Jackson for the early 1-0 lead. The Lady Mocs responded with a home run of their own to tie the game at one. In the bottom of the third, Chattanooga took the lead, 4-1 on three runs, courtesy of four hits. The Lady Mocs collected two insurance runs, one in the fourth and the other in the sixth inning, while giving up just one more to Western to provide the 6-2 defeat for Western. Jackson suffered the loss for Wester, allowing six runs on 10 hits, with two strikeouts and a walk over five innings of work. Filley pitched the final inning, giving up no runs, while striking out two of the three batters she faced. Between the two games, Beatty led the Lady Cats, going three for five with a walk; Pritchard was four for seven with two doubles and three RBI's, including a perfect three for three in the second game of the doubleheader. Adams went three for seven with a homerun and two runs scored. Photo Credits: Mark Haskett
